Position Opening: Library Information Specialist I

Library Information Specialist I – 100% FTE, $10.92/hour, Circulation/Reserve; 40 hours per week, mostly evenings (at least three) and weekends with schedule adjustment during intersessions after training is completed. Training will start as daytime hours between the hours of 8-5 M-F and then will move to evening hours with a more experienced supervisor at some point during probation.

Duties: This person may be asked to be the night supervisor at least three nights per week and possibly at least one weekend shift at the Ellis Circulation Reserve Desk with the rest of the schedule being regular daytime hours. Flexibility in scheduling will be an asset. Will be the only full time staff person on duty much of the time, supervising several student employees working 40 hours per week, including being the back-up for evening and weekend hours as needed during times of absences of other employees scheduled to work those shifts. Generally the evening hours are from 4PM to midnight but occasionally will need to cover 6 PM to 2 AM for absence of the person working those hours regularly.  Hours will generally be 7:30 am-4:30 pm. weekdays.

Reports to Head of Access Services.

Flexibility in scheduling will be an asset. Will generally work daytime hours but in some situations will be asked to work evenings and weekends when regularly scheduled staff in those positions are unable to work.  Will be the only full time staff person on duty some of the time, supervising several student employees. Works as a team member with any other supervisor with who schedules overlap. This position serves as a resource to both patrons and other staff in other departments regarding circulation and reserve policies.  You will be responsible for the operation of the MERLIN Circulation System and reporting all problems to the appropriate departments in a timely manner. Will issue borrower cards and handle all questions relating to borrowing materials. Will put items on traditional course reserve and monitor and assist faculty in putting items on Electronic Reserves. This position is responsible for compiling statistics for the Department Head.  Outstanding communication skills will be required since written referrals will be made for supervisors the following workday to follow up. Must be able to remain calm and make appropriate decisions during times of stress.  You will need excellent telephone and in person interpersonal skills. Good listening skills and the ability to explain issues clearly and work to satisfactory resolution of problems. Prior library experience required.  Supervisory experience is desired.  Some physical stamina required, involving moving materials on book trucks weighing up to 100 pounds for short distances. Must be able to stand and move about several hours per day and stand on ladders and footstools as needed.  You will be required to read call numbers on books located on ground level and up to nine feet in height with the use of ladders and step stools. Lighting may be diminished in some places.

Minimum qualifications: A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary. Six months of responsible office experience is necessary. Directly related education or training may be substituted for experience.  The ability to type may be necessary depending on the position available.

Preferred qualifications: Prior library experience required.

INFORMATION ITEM: Fiscal Officer Ellen Blair and LMT reviewed Library Budget Worksheets.  Discussion ensued about open positions and how they will be funded.  LMT will seek to fill recently opened positions as they currently exist (as written in their respective job descriptions). Ellen and LMT will continue to analyze and discuss how new positions may be funded and the impact on older/long-term vacancies.  They will also look into how “salary savings” (one-time funds generated by staff openings) are spent. A report will be made at the all-staff meeting in August.

INFORMATION ITEM: LMT discussed various open positions within MU Libraries and the status of searches planned and underway.

INFORMATION ITEM: LMT Retreat and All Staff Meeting – LMT members will soon initiate discussions within each division regarding the MU Libraries Goals and Objectives.  Division Heads will seek updates, progress reports and general feedback of progress toward Objectives.  Outcomes will be an agenda item at this summer’s all staff meeting.  The all staff meeting is tentatively set for 8/7/12.

Position Opening: Fiscal Assistant

Fiscal Assistant*; 100% FTE, M-F, 8-5, $11.68/hr. Administration, Ellis Library.

Duties: Perform a variety of responsible and complex support services for the MU Libraries Fiscal Officer.  Requires extensive attention to detail, maintain accurate and confidential financial information, data entry, report generation, ordering supplies, etc. Requires the ability to follow through on projects with minimum oversight.

Provide high level support for Libraries Fiscal Officer. Duties include but are not limited to: Conduct review and reconciliation of financial records in PeopleSoft; Identify sources to meet the libraries purchasing needs.  Evaluate and initiate services such as printing, parking permits, auto leasing reservations, equipment maintenance, etc. Communicate appropriate feedback to staff in response to their purchase requests; Initiate orders and provide necessary information to ensure receipt and payment; Prepare Lapsed Salary reports; Provide Controls review; Perform accounts payable functions including but not limited to travel and other vouchers; Perform PeopleSoft data-entry, requisitioning and receiving processes, generate money received reports; Update budget spreadsheets (travel, purchases, gift budget, etc.); Manage receipts and credit card records. Perform basic math computations. Work under direct supervision and meet speed and accuracy goals as determined by the department. Other duties as assigned. Also, provide general office support for library Administrative Office staff.  Assist with supervising and assigning tasks to student assistants in Administrative Offices, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications: An Associate’s degree in accounting, finance, or related area, or four years of progressively responsible clerical experience, two years of which must have been above the entry clerical level and involved the application of clerical procedures to a variety of situa­tions.

Preferred Qualifications: The ability to efficiently support the work of several supervisors is necessary. Requires excellent telephone skills and effective interpersonal communication skills. Proficiency in Word, Outlook and Excel and accuracy in typing and data entry a must. Requires ability to work well with others, attention to detail, organization and initiative. No typing test required.

Fourth Annual Diversity Luncheon, July 10

The MU Libraries’ Diversity Action Committee and MULSA invite you to participate in the Fourth Annual Diversity Luncheon on Tuesday, July 10th that will feature ethnic food. Here are the details in a Q&A format:

  • When/where will it be held? Tuesday, July 10th in the Ellis Library Staff Lounge. Lunch runs 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Who is providing the food? You! If you are willing to do so, of course.
  • What type of food should I bring? Anything that represents any part of your heritage.
  • Can I attend the event even if I don’t bring food to share? YES! This is open to all library employees, including students.
  • How much food should I bring? That is up to you.
  • Should I let DAC know if I’m bringing food? Yes, please contact Karen Paulik Witt WittK@missouri.edu and provide the name or type of dish and the estimated number of people it will serve.
  • Where will the luncheon take place? In the Ellis Library Staff Lounge. There are plenty of outlets for slow cookers and a couple of microwave ovens.
  • Do I need to do anything after I drop off my dish? Yes. We ask that you take responsibility for setting up the dish prior to the lunch period.
  • Would it be okay for me to talk about my dish as people pass through the food line? Absolutely. In fact, we encourage it for anyone so inclined.
  • Is this a legitimate DAC activity? Yes. One goal is to highlight the cultural diversity embodied by library employees.
  • Does attendance during lunch count as release time? No, since this is a volunteer luncheon versus a workshop or program.
  • But what about the food prep time? Yes, with supervisor approval.
  • If possible, bring your own plates and flatware for a green and diverse lunch.

Healthy for Life Update

Weight Watchers
Starting July 1, 2012, Healthy for Life will no longer be organizing classes on campus or offering a participation rebate. If you are currently enrolled in a 12-week session that is scheduled to end after July 1, you can submit your tracker to employee wellness at 205 Heinkel Building, MU to receive your rebate.

Faculty and Staff will continue to be eligible for Weight Watchers discounts:

  • If you are a Coventry member, you are now eligible for a discounted rate to enroll in Weight Watchers online. For $55, you can access recipes, tracking tools and chat boards for three months. That’s less than $5 per week!
  • Weight Watchers also offers a discount for University of Missouri faculty and staff who enroll through its portal system.
    • Login Instructions: Go to this website https://wellness.weightwatchers.com and enter in the MU ID 46814 and passcode WW446814. It will then take you to next page where you enter in your personal information and set up your website user ID and password (this user ID and password is just for this registration website). There is only one website portal, so be sure when you enter in the company address specify which location you want to attend a meeting. Enrolling through this portal will give you a $39.95/month membership instead of $42.95!


Million Step Pedometer Program

This on-going program is designed for the University of Missouri’s faculty and staff to get moving through counting their steps. For $15, participants will receive a pedometer and a log book. Once you reach 1 million steps, you get to keep the pedometer and you’ll receive a T-shirt, certificate and a $15 refund. There are a variety of prizes for every additional million steps you take—with no limit. To enroll, contact wellness@umsystem.edu.

City Cycling:
PedNet is working with Healthy for Life to help you incorporate biking into your daily activities.  City Cycling Class is taught by League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructors who are very experienced in all aspects of biking for transportation and recreation.  Whether you are an experienced cyclist or just bike curious, City Cycling will help you bike more, stay active and be Healthy for Life!

Class covers:
·     The rules of the road for safe and legal biking.

·    Improve safety and avoid crashes through bike handling skill drills.

·     Put your new biking expertise to work with an instructor guided ride around town to familiarize you with the rules of the road and bike friendly routes.

City Cycling is a five-hour course available as one weekend morning or two evening sessions. City Cycling consists of on-bike and lecture portions. Class setting and pace are non-competitive, laid back and casual.

Healthy Men Needed for Exercise and Bone Study

Study seeks men 25 to 60 years old who are physically active (4 hrs. per week) for a clinical trial to test the effects of different types of exercise on bone density. Participants must be able to perform weight-lifting or plyometric (jumping) exercise. Benefits of participation include supervised exercise training, determination of body composition and bone density, and monetary compensation.
