Earn Your $100 Wellness Incentive
As part of your 2013 benefits, you are eligible for a wellness incentive. Healthy for Life is an incentive-based wellness program designed to help you earn your incentive and actively manage your health. By completing a personal health assessment, health screening, and 240 minutes of physical activity, primary subscribers to the UM health plans will receive $100 in a tax-favored account to use for medical expenses in 2013 Benefit Plan year.

  • Mondays-Fridays, 7 a.m.-12 a.m., AP Green Chapel is available for silent meditation, prayer or contemplation

Learn to eat for health and enjoyment
Discover the benefits of this innovative approach to weight management through Healthy for Life’s Eat for Life course.  This 10-week program uses mind-body practices (meditations and yoga), the principles of mindful and intuitive eating, skills training, and group support to guide you in making lifestyle changes that will help you create a healthier relationship to your food, mind, and body. If you have a history of chronic dieting, have rigid “healthy” rules about eating, or find yourself eating when you’re stressed, bored, or unhappy, this may be the program for you.

·         In Person Orientation: Wednesday, Jan. 23 (12-1 p.m.)

·         In Person Class: Wednesdays, Jan. 30-Apr. 17, no class on Feb. 8 or Mar. 27 (12–1pm)

·         Online Orientation: week of Jan. 18

·         Online Class: week of Jan. 25-Apr. 5 (except spring break)

·         Online Registration Deadline: Monday, Jan. 14

·         Cost: $50 for faculty, staff and family members ($25 refunded with full participation); $180 for community members

Lower your stress in just 8 weeks

Helping employees manage stress effectively is a key goal of Healthy for Life. The wellness program offers eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction classes at minimal cost to benefit-eligible employees looking to manage today’s busy lifestyles in a healthy way. This is an 8–week class teaching meditation, yoga and other mind-body techniques for managing stress. There is a $40 registration fee, $20 reimbursement if you attend seven of the eight classes.

·         Orientation: Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 5:30–6:30 p.m.

·         Classes: Wednesdays (Jan. 23-Mar. 20), from 5:3 –7:30 p.m.

·         Full Day Retreat: Saturday, March 9,  9 a.m.–4 p.m.


Get moving with physical activity classes

  • Jan. 11-Mar. 1: Yoga. Missouri Psychiatric Center, Gym. Class meets Fridays from 12:10-12:50 p.m. and costs $24 for the eight-week series. Hatha Yoga classes are for all experience levels and taught by an experienced yoga teacher. Register by emailing Kate Walker at Integrallife1976@yahoo.com. Chair Massage Available

De-stress this semester through massage therapy. Licensed Massage Therapist Jeff Rioux provides this service in his office at University Hospital (GL-20). He also provides department chair massage in three-hour blocks. To schedule an individual appointment or chair massage, call Healthy for Life at 884-1312.

Million Step Pedometer Program

This on-going program is designed for the University of Missouri’s faculty and staff to get moving through counting their steps. For $15, participants will receive a pedometer and a log book. Once you reach 1 million steps, you get to keep the pedometer and you’ll receive a T-shirt, certificate and a $15 refund. There are a variety of prizes for every additional million steps you take—with no limit. To enroll, contact wellness@umsystem.edu.


Ride to Wellness Program

This program is designed for the University of Missouri’s faculty and staff to get moving through counting their miles. For $20, participants will receive an odometer and a log book. Once you reach 500 miles, you get to keep the odometer and you’ll receive a T-shirt, certificate and a $20 refund. There are a variety of prizes for every additional 500 miles—with no limit. Weight Watchers

Faculty and Staff are eligible for Weight Watchers discounts:

  • If you are a Coventry member, you are eligible for a discounted rate to enroll in Weight Watchers online. Get registration details now. For $55, you can access recipes, tracking tools and chat boards for three months. That’s less than $5 per week!
  • Weight Watchers also offers a discount for University of Missouri faculty and staff who enroll through its portal system.
    • Login Instructions: Go to this website https://wellness.weightwatchers.com and enter in the MU ID 46814 and passcode WW46814. It will then take you to next page where you enter in your personal information and set up your website user ID and password (this user ID and password is just for this registration website). There is only one website portal, so be sure when you enter in the company address specify which location you want to attend a meeting. Learn to eat for health and enjoyment
Discover the benefits of this innovative approach to weight management through Healthy for Life’s Eat for Life course.  This 10-week program uses mind-body practices (meditations and yoga), the principles of mindful and intuitive eating, skills training, and group support to guide you in making lifestyle changes that will help you create a healthier relationship to your food, mind, and body. If you have a history of chronic dieting, have rigid “healthy” rules about eating, or find yourself eating when you’re stressed, bored, or unhappy, this may be the program for you.

  • In Person Orientation: Jan. 23 (12-1 p.m.)
  • In Person Class: Jan. 30-Apr. 17, no class on Feb. 8 or Mar. 27 (12 – 1pm)
  • Online Orientation: Jan. 18
  • Online Class: Jan. 25-Apr. 5 (except spring break)
  • Cost: $50 for faculty, staff and family members ($25 refunded with full participation); $180 for community members

Lower your stress in just 8 weeks

Helping employees manage stress effectively is a key goal of Healthy for Life. The wellness program offers eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction classes at minimal cost to benefit-eligible employees looking to manage today’s busy lifestyles in a healthy way. This is an 8–week class teaching meditation, yoga and other mind-body techniques for managing stress. There is a $40 registration fee, $20 reimbursement if you attend seven of the eight classes.

Free Blood Pressure Screening Event
The Sinclair School of Nursing and Healthy for Life have partnered to offer a free blood pressure clinic on Tuesday, Nov. 13. From 10 a.m.-1 p.m., you can stop by Memorial Union South, Room 110 without an appointment. School of Nursing students will take your blood pressure and provide educational information, as well as sell pedometers and odometers for Healthy for Life’s Million Step and Ride to Wellness programs. There will be a drawing for prizes for all who receive a blood pressure check.

Free Movie: Weight of the Nation
Make plans to attend the free screening of HBO’s Weight of the Nation on Thursday, Nov. 15 from 5-7 p.m. at the Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services building at 1005 West Worley Street. RSVP by Nov. 9 by calling (573) 874-7345.

Get Moving…Avoid the Flu
Flu shots are now available through Healthy for Life, the faculty and staff wellness program. Mark your calendars for campus flu clinics listed below . Faculty, Staff and their dependents who are 12 years and older AND are enrolled in a UM Health Care plan can receive a FREE flu shot. To do so, please bring your insurance card (for each individual receiving the vaccine) and a completed Flu Consent Form. No appointment needed, just show up! Not a UM Health Care plan enrollee? That’s ok, those 12 years and older can still receive the vaccination. Please bring $15 (cash or check made payable to Healthy for Life), as well as a completed Flu Consent Form.

*The MU Student Health Center is giving $12 flu shots to all Mizzou students. Bring your ID to any of the flu clinics because it’s student charge only or call for an appointment at the Health Center.

Earn Your $100 Wellness Incentive
As part of your 2013 benefits, you are eligible for a wellness incentive. Healthy for Life is an incentive-based wellness program designed to help you earn your incentive and actively manage your health. By completing a personal health assessment, health screening, and 240 minutes of physical activity, primary subscribers to the UM health plans will receive $100 in a tax-favored account to use for medical expenses in 2013 Benefit Plan year.

Earn $100 in 3 Easy Steps:

  1. Complete your personal health assessment–an online questionnaire that helps you understand your health risks and provides you with resources to improve your well-being. (between Oct. 15, 2012 and Apr. 30, 2013)
  2. Complete your health screening, which includes cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, height and weight. You can schedule a FREE on campus screening or visit your health care provider (valid screenings are between June 1, 2012 and Apr. 30, 2013).
  3. Track 240 minutes of physical activity in any calendar month (between Oct. 15, 2012 and Apr. 30, 2013).

Ready to get started?

  1. Create or return to your Cerner Health account by visiting www.healthyforlife.umsystem.edu.
  2. Enter your email address and join the program.

Better Choices Better Health is a FREE workshop that teaches you the skills you need to manage your symptoms & take control of your health! Participants receive a Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions book and a Time for Healing CD. Diabetes classes scheduled
The University Physicians-Green Meadows Family Medicine Clinic will host a series of diabetes classes during November. The classes will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. each Tuesday from Nov. 6 to Nov. 27 in the Green Meadows Family Medicine Gold Team Conference Room. Marilee Bomar, APRN, a clinical nurse specialist; Tamara Day, RN, a nurse clinician; and Kate Allhoff, RD, a registered clinical dietitian, will teach the classes, which will be based on the national standards of diabetes self-management education. Division of IT to hold data-shredding event

In recognition of October as National Cyber Security Awareness Month, the University of Missouri Division of IT is hosting a data-shredding event for employees to bring old computer hard drives, CDs and other data devices to be properly destroyed. Employees can bring their materials between 2 and 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, to the MU Surplus Property building on Rock Quarry Road.
