If you have a history of chronic dieting, have rigid “healthy” rules about eating, or find yourself eating when you’re stressed, bored, or unhappy, this may be the program for you.

Act Healthy Class Will Be Offered in Ellis Library

I’ve just signed up to be a co-leader for a new research study called Act Healthy. People enrolled in the study will receive $40 in gift cards and those in the treatment group will attend 6 health classes over the lunch hour. People in previous classes improved sleep habits, quit nail biting, started exercising, and practiced patience in relationships – all kinds of healthy things. Read below for more information.

Show Me Better Health

Do you have diabetes, heart disease, cancer, arthritis, fibromyalgia, depression, or any ongoing health condition?  Are you a caregiver for someone with an ongoing condition?  Show Me Better Health is an interactive workshop that teaches you the skills you need to take control of your health.  Sessions are highly participative, where mutual support and success builds your confidence in your ability to manage your symptoms and maintain active fulfilling lives.  Topics include exercise & nutrition; managing pain, fatigue, difficult emotions, & depression; medications & making treatment decisions; talking with your friends, family, & healthcare team; and more.  You will receive a Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions book and Time for Healing CD.  The next workshop is scheduled every Tuesday starting June 11th through July 16th (6 weeks) from 6–8 p.m. at the University Hospital.  To register for this FREE workshop, contact Amber Phelps at 573-882-8097 or phelpsam@missouri.edu.


Take a stress-reduction break with Meditation

Research over the past two decades suggests that engaging in a regular mindfulness meditation practice can reduce stress and enhance overall psychological and physical wellbeing.  Find out for yourself by taking advantage of the sitting meditation session each week. All faculty and staff are welcome on a drop-in basis, and no previous experience with meditation is necessary. Ride to Wellness Program

This program is designed for University of Missouri faculty and staff to get moving by counting their bicycle miles. For $20, participants will receive an odometer and a log book. Once you reach 500 miles, you get to keep the odometer and you’ll receive a T-shirt, certificate and a $20 rebate. There are a variety of prizes for every additional 500 miles—with no limit. Research Opportunities

  • Study: Physical activity in people with knee pain
    • Sponsor: Mizzou’s Department of Physical Therapy
    • Requirements: Age 40 years or older, who HAVE been diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis, HAVE knee pain using stairs, and HAVE been told to exercise by their physician. The three lab visits will include questionnaires, an interview, and measures of leg speed and strength. Completing all the visits will take a total of about 6 hours. You will be compensated for your time. (Participation is not connected to any medical care or services.) For more information, please contact a program staff member at: 573-884-7823. Be informed about tobacco cessation & blood pressure

Healthy for Life will have tables set up on campus to provide wellness information through the end of this semester. You can learn more about tobacco cessation resources as Mizzou will be smoke-free starting July 1, 2013. In addition, you can get a free blood pressure screening and education on how to keep your blood pressure in a healthy range.

Kudos to Kate Walker

Congratulations to Wellness Ambassador Kate Walker (Campus Facilities Training & Development Coordinator) for competing in the USAPL Powerlifting Missouri/Ozark Championships in St. Louis on Mar. 23.  USA Powerlifting was founded in 1982 and is the USA’s oldest drug tested powerlifting organization. At Saturday’s event, Kate took gold as well as setting a new Missouri record and two American records!


5K Run/Walk on April 6, still time to register

Time is Running Out to Earn Your Incentive!
As part of your 2013 benefits, you are eligible for a wellness incentive. Healthy for Life is an incentive-based wellness program designed to help you earn your incentive and actively manage your health. By completing a personal health assessment, health screening, and 240 minutes of cardiovascular physical activity, primary subscribers to the UM health plans will receive $100 in a tax-favored account to use for medical expenses in 2013 Benefit Plan year. You can receive your health screening through Healthy for Life or by going to your health care provider. If you’ve gone to your provider, you can submit your results by using our doctor screening form.

Earn $100 in 3 Easy Steps:

1. Complete your personal health assessment–an online questionnaire that helps you understand your health risks and provides you with resources to improve your well-being. (between Oct. 15, 2012 and Apr. 30, 2013)
2. Complete your health screening, which includes cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, height and weight. You can schedule a FREE on campus screening or visit your health care provider (valid screenings are between June 1, 2012 and Apr. 30, 2013).
3. Track 240 minutes of everyday physical activity in any calendar month (between Oct. 15, 2012 and Apr. 30, 2013).

If you have had your annual physical, you can complete the Doctor Screening Form and fax it in! It must be completed in its entirety to get credit.

Order a Home Access kit – If neither of those options works for you, you may request a Home Access kit by calling 866-352-4372 between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. CST Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. The Home Access kit allows you to collect a small blood sample from your finger and mail it to the Home Access Health Corporation certified laboratory for processing.  It takes 2-3 business days to receive your kit once it’s been ordered.  Kits must be sent back and postmarked by April 15, 2013 to receive credit. You will need to gather your blood pressure, height and weight on your own, as these are required for the incentive.
