Library Information Assistant – 100% FTE, M-F 8-5; $9.05/hr. Interlibrary Loan Department – Lending, Access Services, Ellis Library

Duties: Provide service to patrons from other libraries requesting items, either as photocopies or loans, from the MU Libraries collection. Process requests includes obtaining call numbers using MERLIN (the library’s online catalog system); retrieving books from the stacks utilizing alphanumeric call numbers; updating these requests on the ILLiad (specialized program designed for Interlibrary Loan), the RAPID System and MOBIUS/MERLIN circulation system, using computer workstation; checking out books on MERLIN, preparing books for shipment; and assisting in other interlibrary lending processes as needed. Work independently and efficiently in providing this service in a timely manner as set by the department.

This position requires some physical stamina and involves moving materials and related physical actions as part of the workday. Must be able to move fully loaded book trucks (at least 200 lbs.). Must be able to read call numbers on books located on shelves at ground level and up to nine feet in height and where lighting is diminished; ladders and footstools are available.

Minimum Qualifications: A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary. Six months of responsible office experience is necessary. Directly related education or training may be substituted for experience. The ability to type may be necessary depending upon the position available. Typing speed of 25-30 wpm required.

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated aptitude with clerical skills, attention to detail and ability to work closely with others. Knowledge of library classification systems, prior library work experience and experience with computers helpful.

Job Vacancy, Research Specialist

*Research Specialist, 50% FTE, M-F, $12.31/hr; Health Sciences Library, Administration.

Duties: Work at the Health Sciences Library and provide general support for activities of a regional research project. Track data flowing from multiple locations; monitor project progress; assist with tasks associated with data analysis and data presentation. Work under the general supervision of the part-time Library Research Consultant, and in collaboration with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Liaison representative, and with oversight from the Health Sciences Library Director. This position is funded by the library’s portion of funds generated by Health Sciences Library grants and contracts.

Duties include setting up surveys using Survey Monkey, tracking data using spreadsheets, and archiving data sets as required. Monitor data flow from multiple research sites, opening and closing data collection, in accordance with an established schedules. Create graphs and charts illustrating data. Assist with presentation of data in multiple forms using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Power Point. Assist in the creation of posters and other visual presentations of the research project data. Assist Library Research Consultant with data analysis using SAS or SPSS. Manipulate data sets to extract requested information. Prepare weekly progress report using a standardized form, and distribute as needed. Prepare statistical reports related to project activity upon request. Maintain paper and electronic files related to library research project activities.

Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in an appropriate area of science is necessary. Six months to one year of professional, directly related experience is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications: Documented experience in research project participation and independent activity. Proficiency in data entry in either Excel or Access; skill in formatting quantitative data into tables, graphs, etc. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Power Point. Excellent communication skills. Documented proficiency in SAS or SPSS. Project management experience.

Hello to Karen Marshall

Hello to Karen Marshall, LIA and night supervisor at the Journalism Library. Karen’s duties include assisting the student workers with any questions or concerns and helping patrons. Karen graduated from MU in 2007, and before making the transition to the Journalism Library, worked in the catalog management unit of the Ellis technical services department for a little over a year, and worked in Ellis circulation for a time.
