Meatless Monday Munch

MU Libraries Meatless Monday Munchers commit to bringing one meatless dish per month to the Ellis Library staff lounge…and get to sample three different meatless dishes every Monday!  Some MMM’s are vegetarians or vegans, but most of us are not…we’re just expanding our options and having a good time.

Update on ACT’s Recycling Program

This is is an update to the March 20, 2009 post Recycle Your 5, 6 and 7 Plastics.

“The focus of the ACT recycling program is to recycle obsolete electronic media and related products, such as VHS tapes, CDs, DVDs, and their respective cases. These items do happen to be made of many of those hard to recycle plastics such as #5 (cases), #6 (VHS tapes and jewel cases), and #7 (CDs and DVDs).

Very simply, if people have media items which they want to recycle, ACT is happy to accept those items during our regular business hours between 8am and 6pm. At the present time we do not have any drop off bins at our location, or anywhere around the city of Columbia. ACT Recycling is located at 2200 Burlington, just north of Vandiver between Range Line and Paris roads. People can also always send these items to ACT via USPS, UPS, or FedEx. Although ACT does not pay for shipping, the value of the donation and the cost of shipping are tax deductible.”

Alternative Community Training (ACT) is now taking #5, 6 and 7 plastics. These are plastic containers that the City of Columbia does not recycle; the City recycles #1 and #2. To find out what kind of plastic you have, just check the number on the bottom of the container. #4 and #5 plastics are primarily plastic wrap and plastic bags. You may recycle plastic bags at most grocery stores in town. For a complete explanation of the different types of plastics, visit Earth911.com.

Please take your 5, 6 and 7 plastics to the ACT center at 2200 Burlington (View Larger Map).

The Greener MU Libraries Task Force will also take your materials to ACT. Please drop off your plastics in Shannon Cary’s office at Ellis Library or in the Health Sciences Library staff lounge.

Recycling at MU Libraries: Packing Peanuts

The Greener MU Libraries Task Force will be sponsoring recycling drives throughout the year. In February and March we will be collecting packing peanuts. You can bring packing peanuts to my office and at the end of the month, the Task Force will deliver the peanuts to the appropriate recycling locations.

We will be collecting computers and other electronic trash sometime this spring or summer.

Battery Recycling Month at MU Libraries

The Greener MU Libraries Task Force will be sponsoring recycling drives throughout the year. This month we will be collecting batteries. You can bring batteries to my office and at the end of the month, the Task Force will deliver the batteries to the appropriate recycling locations.

The City of Columbia now says that alkaline batteries are not recyclable and may be discarded in the trash. It seems that these batteries have a low-level of toxicity and are relatively safe for landfills. That being said, there are still some places in town that will take your alkaline batteries. If you feel more comfortable not throwing them away, we will accept alkaline batteries as part of our recycling drive.

Please contact me if you have any questions. For more information about recycling batteries in Columbia, visit http://www.gocolumbiamo.com/PublicWorks/Solidwaste/batteryrecycling.php.
