The entry with the most answers correct wins. Second place goes to the entry with the next highest number of correct answers. Third place goes to the next highest number of correct answers. If there is a tie in the number of correct answers at any point, winners will be determined by drawing from the correct entries. For example if someone gets 14 answers correct and that is the only entry with that number of answers correct, that entry takes first place. If the next highest number of correct answers is 9 and four entries all have 9 correct, a drawing will be held with those four entries to determine second and third place.
The answers to factual questions and the solutions to puzzles will be provided in News Notes after the contest is closed.

Dear Colleagues,
Some of our most memorable exhibits in past years have showcased the collections and talents of library personnel. The Exhibits Committee now calls upon its colleagues to provide the components for an upcoming show highlighting an area of special interest to many. A number of us are devotees of games and puzzles and have examples of these forms of amusement that are certain to prove an informative, visually compelling and thoroughly entertaining display. We hope that you will share with us your sets of Senet, Wari, Chinesenspiel, Shove Ha’penny, Alquerque, Go, the Royal Game of Ur, Nine Men’s Morris, Shogi, Fox and Geese, Asalto, Caroms, Cribbage, and others. Certainly the exhibit would not be complete without such standards as Chess, Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Checkers, Mastermind, etc. as well. If examples of these better-known games were somehow unique (a first, early, special or foreign made edition, or handcrafted) it would enhance the presence of that classic in the show. Game nights at some of your homes are occasions for the enjoyment of several of the latest entrants into the world of competitive fun and our exhibit would be enhanced by examples of such emerging pastimes. Puzzles and or toys that require skill such as ball in cup or paddle ball, spinning tops, Rubik’s Cube, etc would add a vibrant dimension to the show. Assuredly, computer games are welcome (the box in which a game came would probably be adequate to showcase many electronic diversions). We are looking forward to this exhibit and to your participation.
The show is scheduled for July 2009. Please contact me as soon as possible to reserve space in the upcoming display for your favorite game or puzzle.
Additionally in keeping with the theme for this show, we are holding a contest which will be announced in detail soon. To whet your appetite for the game, be aware that in addition to bragging rights, the first place winner will receive a $25 book store gift certificate, and the 2nd and 3rd place winners will be awarded concert tickets.

To celebrate Women’s History Month, the Departments of Classics, Women’s and Gender Studies, and the American Association of University Women, Columbia Branch, partnered to salute the life and legacy of Eva Johnston. Johnston, a native Missourian, was the first female professor of Classics at MU as well as its first Dean of Women. A residence hall is named in her honor.
The display is entitled “Eva Johnston: Classicist, Leader, Mentor” and can be found in a wooden case on the main floor of Ellis Library from March 2 to 31, 2009. It includes photographs, letters, reports, translations, books, and pamphlets all made available courtesy of MU Archives, Western Historical Manuscript Collection, the Classics Department, Ellis Library, and the AAUW- Columbia Branch.
The display text, written by Carlynn Trout, highlights Johnston’s work as a scholar, teacher, dean, and organizer of various organizations at the University and in Columbia. Dr. Jane Biers, AAUW, assisted with the installation.
Please check out the Banned Book exhibit at Ellis Library in the west freestanding case.
Every year over 900 MU students choose to broaden their horizons by spending a term studying overseas. The MU International Center hosts a photo contest for study abroad returnees annually. The photos are divided into three categories: Portraits, Landscapes, and Cross-Cultural Moments. This year 32 finalists will proudly display in the Bookmark Cafe from January to March, 2008. The “Best in Show” prize winners will be selected and honored during the Spring 2008 semester. You are invited to visit the MU International Center Web site to see current finalists and past photo contest winners: http://international.missouri.edu/studyabroad/after/photo.shtml.
