Healthy for Life Update

Wellness Incentive: Tier 1 ends April 30…it’s not too late to get started!
Tier 1 of the 2016 Wellness Incentive ends April 30. Complete these two simple steps in order to earn $100* in your final May paycheck and help define what wellness means to you:

  1. Sign a wellness pledge, which most eligible employees** signed during Annual Enrollment in October 2015.
  2. Complete a Personal Health Assessment (PHA)—this online questionnaire takes about 15 minutes and is designed to identify any potential health risks. Log in to the Wellness Portal to complete your PHA.

Educate yourself to discover ways you could improve your health. Then, invest in yourself by participating in Tier 2 activities that help you reach your goals. Check out http://umurl.us/incentive for more information. For questions, please contact the HR Service Center at (573) 882-2146 or HRServiceCenter@umsystem.edu.

*2016 Wellness Incentive earnings will be taxed and voluntary retirement contributions will be deducted, just like with other earnings.

MLA Presentation Academy

MLA has designed a very special continuing education event for Missouri library staff.

Presentation Academy is a unique, hybrid training experience designed to boost your presenation skills, especially focused on encouraging and support library staff to provide successful workshop and conference presentations. The entire academy will include multiple events: a four-hour in-person workshop offered at several locations, followed by a series of one-hour webinars offered this summer, and concluding with a preconference at the 2016 annual MLA conference. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to attend all three facets of the Academy.

Registration is open for the four-hour Presentation Academy workshops taking place in May in seven locations (Daniel Boone Regional Library – Columbia – May 12, 9am – 1pm) around the state (content is identical at all sites, so register for the location and date best for you).  The cost of the sessions is just $15 for MLA members or $40 for non-members

At the May workshop, participants will:

·         Develop ideas for conference proposals

·         Explore different presentation formats and choose the best one for your ideas

·         Engage in small-group discussion on presentation strategies

Learn more about the Presentation Academy, on the MLA web page: http://molib.org/presentation-academy-registration-opens-friday-april-1st/, or register directly at www.2016mlaworkshops.ezregister.com.

Congratulations to Edward McCain on receiving an IMLS 2016 Laura Bush 21st Century grant!

The University of Missouri Libraries in collaboration with the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute, University of California Los Angeles Library, and the Educopia Institute, will host a national forum for 100 attendees from multiple sectors to advance knowledge and practice of preserving online born-digital news content. The forum will be the third in the Dodging the Memory Hole series and has the overarching goal of developing and implementing a national strategy for born-digital news preservation as traditional systems for collecting, preserving, and providing access are not adequate for preserving a vital and growing portion of our nation's cultural record in the 21st century. In addition to the forum, the project includes the production and publication of an outline for a national agenda for preserving born-digital news online; identification of roles for stakeholders; facilitation of knowledge sharing; examination of technology platforms; preparation of students; and the identification of fundable projects that will advance online preservation practice.

Social Media Policy
Mike presented the policy which was created by the Social Media Team. LMT agreed that overall it was a good policy. Their only suggestion was that a reference to 330.010 Personal Conduct of Employees be added to the last paragraph.

ACTION: The Social Media Policy was approved with a minor addition.

After Hours Use of the Census Research Data Center Policy
Mike presented the policy. Jeannette asked if we would get push back about the part of the policy that states that visitors may not bring guests into the building due to safety reasons. LMT members agreed that safety measures are in place and this section of the policy should remain.
ACTION: The After Hours Use of the Census Research Data Center Policy was approved.

ACTION: Mike will present both policies to Library Assembly.

Funding for National Network of Libraries of Medicine Announced

At HSL, we are pleased that the National Library of Medicine has publicly announced the funding for the next five years of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. The J. Otto Lottes Health Sciences Library is a Resource Library in the Network, and is a participating “partner" in network activities for this contract. Barb Jones, Coordinator for the State of Missouri, is funded by this sub-contract. Her work consists of providing outreach to hospitals, schools, clinics, health departments, and health-related organizations to make them aware of health-related information resources and services. She also advocates for health sciences libraries. She supports return-on-investment activities and works to promote understanding of how libraries contribute to the quality of health professionals' education and patient care. We are proud of Barb’s work, and are glad to see that it will continue. The new contract begins on May 1, 2016.

Caught in the Act: Results

The Caught in the Act was a simple staff appreciation program where Wellness Ambassadors were asked to recognize fellow employees for being ‘caught in the act’ of a random act of wellness. Activities could be simple or complex. Employees were caught taking the stairs, mentoring a co-worker, drinking more water, hosting a plank challenge and so many more! Over the course of the program 187 Wellness Ambassadors submitted an impressive 632 random acts of wellness! Healthy for Life would like to thank ambassadors for participating and congratulate all those who were nominated.

Healthy for Life has created a webpage devoted to the Caught in the Act program. Similar to the easy action steps for each Culture of Health priority area, compiled here you will find activities that employees are engaging in on all University of Missouri Campuses. Select ‘see more ways UM employees were caught….’ under each priority area to see a full listing of activities and highlights from each campus.

Look for Caught in the Act next spring!
