Follow-Up on Extended Hours at Ellis Library During Finals

Based on the number of students who used Ellis Library during the extended (until 4 a.m.) finals hours last semester, it has been decided that we will continue to have extended hours next fall and spring semester. Ellis Library will have extended hours (open until 4am) on Sunday of finals week and continue through Thursday. Our statistics showed that both weekends (Friday and Saturday) were underwhelming as far as turnout. However, Sunday through Wednesday showed significant numbers of students taking advantage of the extended hours.

Local Collection Heading Updated in MERLIN

The Catalog Department recently updated the local collection headings we use in MERLIN. All generally follow one standard now: Collection name (University of Missouri—Columbia. Libraries).

Background: Local collection headings are created to pull together resources received or purchased as gifts (William Peden Short Story Collection) and to provide a way to access material that is treated as a collection (World War II Poster Collection).

Over the years we have used formal and informal headings; some were available as subject searches and some as author searches. We reviewed all the headings several months ago, studied Library of Congress practices, and discussed current headings with public services staff in the areas that have the collections. Based on the information we gathered we standardized what we are using.

A list of the headings is available on the Catalog Department web site: http://mulibraries.missouri.edu/staff/catalogdept/collectionheadings.htm.
You can retrieve these in MERLIN with the author search: MU Collections.

Former headings are still in MERLIN. We will leave them on records through July to give everyone a chance to update information you have.

MU Libraries Summer Book Club

I am instituting a summer book club so that interested staff members can discuss a couple of books by authors that have been on campus recently.

The June selection is Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Die and Others Stick. Leo Agnew has a copy in his office that he will lend out.

The July selection is Generation Me: Why Today’s Young Americans Are More Confident, Assertive, Entitled–and More Miserable Than Ever Before.  This book is also this year’s Mizzou Reads selection.

Please contact me if you are interested in joining the book discussion. You can join one or both. We will discuss each selection at the end of the month or beginning of the following month based on the participants’ schedules.

A wonderful buffet lunch (with cupcakes!) and door prizes were provided by MULSA. Music was provided by harpist Patrice Vale (AKA Michelle Baggett’s mother). Ann Riley acknowledged the IMLS workers who graduated this year–Ashley Nelson and Anthony Strand. Leo Agnew and Shannon Cary read comments about each employee being recognized for service this year. And Jim Cogswell read his annual list of the Top Ten accomplishments of the MU Libraries.

Thanks to everyone who made this year’s Celebration of Service a huge success!

Action and Information Items from Libraries Management Team Meeting, May 18, 2010

Present: Jim Cogswell, Mike Holland, Ann Riley, Deb Ward

Guest: Kate Anderson

Support: Mark Ellis

INFORMATION ITEM:  LMT discussed the Mizzou Advantage All-staff Open Meeting which was scheduled for the following day, May 19th, 1-2:30 pm.  Kate Anderson, the Mizzou Advantage Libraries Liaison will facilitate the meeting.  She had distributed a draft agenda for the open meeting and a PowerPoint to LMT members prior to the meeting.

INFORMATION ITEM: LMT decided to expand the Donor/Honoree Index in MERLIN to include individual book donations, material bought by endowment and any material for which a bookplate (physical or electronic) would be attached.

  • The decision will impact indexing from this point forward.
    • Retro indexing will only be considered for special circumstances.
    • Progress will be monitored and the subject will be revisited if the practice becomes a significant burden or time factor.

ACTION ITEM: Ann will draft an introduction to the Donor/Honoree Index that will outline what material will be included.  She will send a draft to LMT and to Gena Scott, MU Libraries Director of Development.

INFORMATION ITEM: LMT was pleased to notice that in the recently distributed initial budget allotment for FY2011, the MU Libraries Acquisitions budget was not reduced.

ACTION ITEM: Jim Cogswell will write and send a note to the Provost thanking him for the preservation of the Acquisitions budget.  He will copy the note to the Library Committee.
