Scoville Wins Award From Department of Child Health

Congratulations to HSL librarian Caryn Scoville, winner of the Outstanding Clinical Educator Award for the Department of Child Health. At the recent annual awards banquet, Caryn was recognized for the librarian/informationist support she provides to the Child Health department. Caryn participates in the education program by providing training, research support and consultations in conjunction with the Evidence Based Medicine Journal Club and Morning Report. Caryn holds degrees in biology and library science from the University of Missouri. She began working with the Child Health Department in 2008, and has been a librarian at the J. Otto Lottes Health Sciences Library since 1999.

News From the Ellis Library Space and Facility Advisory Committee

The Ellis Library Space and Facility Advisory Committee (ESFAC) has some new projects underway.

ESFAC is currently working on: the removal of the CPRR marble counter, renovating the women’s restroom on the first floor, compiling data for Ellis Library’s current signage dilemma, posting location guides outside of the elevators for our patrons, and researching a student’s request to have cushioned chairs in Ellis Library along with the projects below.

As you can see, ESFAC members are actively working on small and large projects. In addition to a list of considerations the committee members are strategically working through at every ESFAC meeting. All substantial considerations are submitted to the Library Management Team (LMT) as a proposal.  The LMT members have the final word as to whether or not a consideration will be approved.

Lastly, all recommendations/considerations will be reviewed but may not be addressed by the committee.

New University Smoking Policy

The University Smoking Policy will be effective July 1, 2011.

Ellis Library Space and Facility Advisory Committee (ESFAC) will be placing signs at the West and North entrances reminding students and patrons about the new University smoking policy.

  • Effective July 1, 2011 smoking will be permitted only in designated outdoor areas.  No smoking is permitted indoors in any university-owned or university-leased buildings or vehicles.

Library Assembly Election Results

Three departments have representatives to Library Assembly with terms of service that expire this month. Elections were held recently and the following individuals will represent their departments starting July 1, 2011. Each will serve a three-year term.

July Lunchtime Leadership Book Talk

The July Lunchtime Leadership Book Talk will take place on the 19th from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., in 159 Ellis.

This is an opportunity for MU Libraries employees to gather informally over lunch and share quotes from books or articles on the topic of leadership or management that seem especially pertinent for MU Libraries right now. This is open to all library employees as it seems sensible to hear from current and emerging leaders within the organization in terms of what they are reading on the topic.

Attendance is voluntary but compensable for non-exempt supervisors since the discussion applies to the workplace. As such, schedule adjustments may be needed to offset overtime considerations. RSVP’s are not required.

But, we ask you bring a brief something to share with the group, e.g., copies of the talking points of the book or journal article. Positions Open, 2 Library Information Assistants

Library Information Assistant – 100% FTE, (M– F, 8 – 5 during summer and intersessions, generally 10 a.m. -7 p.m.  or 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. M-F during Fall and Spring semesters), $9.05 per hour.  Access, Collections and Technical Services, Access Services, Shelving, Ellis Library.

Duties: Sort books and load trucks to be shelved.  Shelve books from trucks and from return shelves.  Shift the library collection.  Journal Pickups and deliveries. Supervising student employees and monitoring the areas where students are working in the evenings. Search for books that users cannot find in a timely and efficient manner.  This position requires a great deal of physical stamina and involves moving materials and related physical actions most of the workday.  Must be able to move fully loaded book trucks (at least 200 lbs.).  Must be able to read call numbers on tall shelves and on the lower shelves where there is diminished lighting. Ladders and footstools are available for use in the stacks .Must be able to be on one’s feet for long periods of time. Perform alphanumeric sequencing of books and serials. Perform basic math computations during the course of work. Work independently and meet speed and accuracy goals as determined by department.

Min. Quals.: A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary.

Six months of responsible office experience is necessary. Directly related education or training may be substituted for experience.

Preferred Quals.: Supervisory experience and knowledge of Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal classification system is desirable. NO typing test is required for this position.

 

Library Information Assistant – Access Services, Circulation Unit; 100% FTE, $9.05/hour; 40 hours per week, mostly evenings and weekends with schedule adjustments during intersessions.

This position functions as the night supervisor at Ellis Library Circulation/Reserve Desk at least three nights per week and possibly at least one weekend shift, with the rest of the schedule being regular daytime hours. The individual in this position is the only full-time staff person on duty much of the time, supervising several student employees. Flexibility in scheduling will be an asset. Reports to Head of Circulation Unit.

Duties: Serves as a resource to both patrons and other staff in other departments regarding circulation and reserve policies. Works as a team member with any other supervisor with whom schedules overlap. During times of overlap in schedule, this person will search in the Ellis Library stacks for books which patrons and other library staff have been unable to locate during their searching. Responsible for the operation of the MERLIN Circulation System and reporting all problems to the appropriate departments in a timely manner. Issue borrower cards and handle all questions relating to borrowing materials. Because this person works evening hours, outstanding communication skills will be required since written referrals will be made for supervisors the following workday to follow up. Must be able to remain calm and make appropriate decisions during times of stress.  Excellent telephone and in person interpersonal skills. Good listening skills and the ability to explain issues clearly and work to satisfactory resolution of problems.

Minimum qualifications: A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary. Six months of responsible office experience is necessary. Directly related education or training may be substituted for experience.  The ability to type may be necessary depending upon the position available.

Preferred qualifications: Prior library experience preferred.  Supervisory experience is desired.  Some physical stamina required, involving moving materials on book trucks weighing up to 100 pounds for short distances. Must be able to stand and move about several hours per day and stand on ladders and footstools as needed. Must be able to read call numbers on books located on ground level and up to nine feet in height with the use of ladders and step stools. Lighting may be diminished in some places.

  • Who is providing the food? You, if you are willing to do so.
  • What type of food should I bring? Anything that represents any part of your heritage.
  • If possible, bring your own plates and flatware for a green and diverse lunch.
