Only a few weeks left to earn your money
Don’t miss out on your $100 wellness incentive. You only have until Apr. 30, 2013 to complete your personal health assessment, free health screening and 240 minutes of everyday activity. These steps don’t take long, so act now. Active, primary subscribers to the UM health plans will receive $100 in a tax-favored account to use for medical expenses in 2013 Benefit Plan year. Everyone who completes all three steps will be automatically entered into weekly drawings for FitBit Zip pedometers. Improve your relationship with your food and your body. Register for Summer Eat for Life online course.

Discover the benefits of this innovative approach to weight management through Healthy for Life’s Eat for Life course.  This 10-week program uses mind-body practices (meditations and yoga), the principles of mindful and intuitive eating, skills training, and group support to guide you in making lifestyle changes that will help you create a healthier relationship to your food, mind, and body. If you have a history of chronic dieting, have rigid “healthy” rules about eating, or find yourself eating when you’re stressed, bored, or unhappy, this may be the program for you.

Online Course:

  • Online Orientation: week of May 31
  • Online Class: week of June 7 –  week August 9
  • Cost: $50 for faculty, staff and family members ($25 refunded with full participation); $180 for community members

Be more healthy, more energized, and more productive at work and home – Sign up Now!

Helping employees manage stress effectively is a key goal of Healthy for Life. The wellness program offers eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction classes at minimal cost to employees looking to manage today’s busy lifestyles in a healthy way. You will learn mindfulness meditation, yoga, and body scan as well as important information about stress, communication, and wellness.  There is a $40 registration fee (University of Missouri faculty/staff , retirees, and spouses/partners. Attend 7 of 8 classes and receive $20 reimbursement at the end of the class.

Orientation: Wednesday, June 5 (Memorial Union) at 5:00 p.m.

Class: Wednesdays (June 12-July 31) 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. *June 26 class will be from 6-8 p.m.

Retreat: Saturday, July 20 (9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

Research Opportunities

  • Study: Physical activity in people with knee pain
    • Sponsor: Mizzou’s Department of Physical Therapy
    • Requirements: Age 40 years or older, who HAVE been diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis, HAVE knee pain using stairs, and HAVE been told to exercise by their physician. The three lab visits will include questionnaires, an interview, and measures of leg speed and strength. Completing all the visits will take a total of about 6 hours. You will be compensated for your time. (Participation is not connected to any medical care or services.) For more information, please contact a program staff member at: 573-884-7823. Be informed about tobacco cessation & blood pressure

Healthy for Life will have tables set up on campus to provide wellness information through the end of this semester. You can learn more about tobacco cessation resources as Mizzou will be smoke-free starting July 1, 2013. In addition, you can get a free blood pressure screening and education on how to keep your blood pressure in a healthy range.

Kudos to Kate Walker

Congratulations to Wellness Ambassador Kate Walker (Campus Facilities Training & Development Coordinator) for competing in the USAPL Powerlifting Missouri/Ozark Championships in St. Louis on Mar. 23.  USA Powerlifting was founded in 1982 and is the USA’s oldest drug tested powerlifting organization. At Saturday’s event, Kate took gold as well as setting a new Missouri record and two American records!


5K Run/Walk on April 6, still time to register

Help your heart and your health by running or walking the Health Sciences Graduate Student Association’s 5K on Saturday, April 6th at 9 a.m. Packet pick-up and race day registration is from 8-8:45 a.m. on race day (April 6th) at Stephens Lake Park (Gordon Shelter).
