Taking Care of YOU: Body • Mind • Spirit
Good intentions to take care of yourself can be pushed out of reach by the demands on your time and attention.  You may overextend yourself trying to meet the needs of others, face daily responsibilities or live up to expectations.  These demands can lead to feeling stressed or burned out. Life is full of choices—and those choices affect the body, mind and spirit.  Taking Care of YOU is designed to help you deal with life's stress, make wise choices and explore ways to live a healthier life. Taking Care of YOU is an eight-week program that offers practical strategies to help deal with the stress in your life.  Managing life's challenges in healthy ways allows you to take better care of yourself and your overall health.  Each week you will explore topics through small group discussion, self-reflection and activities.

This week’s Flu Report
According to this week’s Flu View report, influenza activity remains elevated nationally. Some states that saw earlier increases in flu activity are now beginning to see decreases. Other states are continuing to see high levels of flu activity or are seeing continued increases in activity. Flu activity is likely to continue for several more weeks. Anyone aged 6 months and older who has not gotten a flu vaccine yet this season should get one now, especially if they are in a part of the country where activity began more recently. All flu vaccines are designed to protect against 2009 H1N1 viruses which are the most common flu viruses so far this season. It's also important that people at high risk for serious flu complications who develop flu-like symptoms or anyone with severe illness consult a health care provider to see whether influenza antiviral drugs might be needed.

February is American Heart Month
February is American Heart Month.  Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, but heart disease is preventable and controllable. “Coronary heart disease occurs when a substance called plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Coronary heart disease can cause heart attack, angina, heart failure, and arrhythmias” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013).  Healthy for Life wants you to know that there are things you can do to plan for prevention. Start by taking small steps toward healthier lifestyle choices and managing any current medical conditions you may have. Below is a list of ways to plan for prevention.

·         Eat a healthy diet

·         Maintain a healthy weight

·         Exercise regularly

·         Monitor blood pressure

·         Don’t smoke

·         Limit alcohol use

·         Have your cholesterol checked

·         Manage your diabetes

·         Take your medication
