MERLIN Catalog Changes for RDA – Update #2

More changes have been made by the Catalog Department to update MERLIN to conform to the new international cataloging rules – RDA (Resource Description and Access). Here are a couple of major changes:

1) Subject and uniform title access points for Bible have been updated:

Before: Bible. N.T.
Now: Bible. New Testament

Before: Bible. O.T.
Now: Bible. Old Testament

Under AACR2 individual books in the Bible were listed under N.T. or O.T. Now the name of the book is directly after Bible.

Before: Bible. N.T. Luke
Now: Bible. Luke

Before: Bible. O.T. Genesis
Now: Bible. Genesis.

2) Subject and uniform title access point for Koran have been updated to Qur’an. Note, that you will still retrieve many entries under Koran, because that is the actual title of resource.

Pins Available to Wear on Denim Day, April 25

 

 

Denim Day has been internationally celebrated since 1999 in protest of an Italian High Court ruling that overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing jeans.  The justices reasoned that since the victim wore very tight jeans, the man who was accused of raping her could not have removed her jeans by himself, so the victim must have willingly participated. Enraged by the verdict, women of the Italian Legislature protested the decision by wearing jeans. As news of the decision spread, so did the protest.

Blue jeans are worn by millions of Americans every day, but students, faculty and staff at the University of Missouri have been asked to wear denim on Thursday, April 25th for a special reason – to step forward and take a stand against rape and sexual violence.

The RSVP (Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention) Center, in partnership with the Craft Studio and True North, will sponsor a Denim Day rape and sexual assault awareness event on campus from 10:00am-2:00pm on Thursday, April 25th in front of the MU Student Center.

Denim Day is an important opportunity to raise awareness and prevent sexual assault against women.  If you would like to participate in Denim Day, wear your denim and/or the MU student-designed Denim Day logo pins on Thursday, April 25th. Sheryl Cullina will be working with the RSVP Center to obtain Denim Day pins for any Library staff who want them.  If you are interested in getting a pin, please let Sheryl know by Monday, April 15.  Pins will also be available at the Denim Day table the day of the event.

Helping employees manage stress effectively is a key goal of Healthy for Life. The wellness program offers eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction classes at minimal cost to employees looking to manage today’s busy lifestyles in a healthy way. You will learn mindfulness meditation, yoga, and body scan as well as important information about stress, communication, and wellness.  There is a $40 registration fee (University of Missouri faculty/staff , retirees, and spouses/partners. Attend 7 of 8 classes and receive $20 reimbursement at the end of the class.

Orientation: Wednesday, June 5 (Memorial Union) at 5:00 p.m.

Class: Wednesdays (June 12-July 31) 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. *June 26 class will be from 6-8 p.m.

Retreat: Saturday, July 20 (9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

Research Opportunities

  • Study: Physical activity in people with knee pain
    • Sponsor: Mizzou’s Department of Physical Therapy
    • Requirements: Age 40 years or older, who HAVE been diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis, HAVE knee pain using stairs, and HAVE been told to exercise by their physician. The three lab visits will include questionnaires, an interview, and measures of leg speed and strength. Completing all the visits will take a total of about 6 hours. You will be compensated for your time. (Participation is not connected to any medical care or services.) For more information, please contact a program staff member at: 573-884-7823. Be informed about tobacco cessation & blood pressure

Healthy for Life will have tables set up on campus to provide wellness information through the end of this semester. You can learn more about tobacco cessation resources as Mizzou will be smoke-free starting July 1, 2013. In addition, you can get a free blood pressure screening and education on how to keep your blood pressure in a healthy range.

Kudos to Kate Walker

Congratulations to Wellness Ambassador Kate Walker (Campus Facilities Training & Development Coordinator) for competing in the USAPL Powerlifting Missouri/Ozark Championships in St. Louis on Mar. 23.  USA Powerlifting was founded in 1982 and is the USA’s oldest drug tested powerlifting organization. At Saturday’s event, Kate took gold as well as setting a new Missouri record and two American records!


5K Run/Walk on April 6, still time to register

Help your heart and your health by running or walking the Health Sciences Graduate Student Association’s 5K on Saturday, April 6th at 9 a.m. Packet pick-up and race day registration is from 8-8:45 a.m. on race day (April 6th) at Stephens Lake Park (Gordon Shelter).
