Healthy for Life Update

September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
One in 3 children in the United States is overweight or obese. Childhood obesity puts kids at risk for health problems that were once seen only in adults, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease (Department of Health and Human Services, 2013).
The good news is that childhood obesity can be prevented! In honor of National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, Healthy for Life encourages your family to:
Get active outside — walk around the neighborhood, go on a bike ride, or play basketball at the park.
Limit screen time — keep inactive (sitting down) screen time to 2 hours or less per day.
Make healthy meals — buy and serve more vegetables, fruits, and whole-grain foods.

If you have Chronic Illness, Pain, Anxiety, Depression—Register Now for Stress Reduction Class

Three decades of research show the Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Program is effective in helping people coping with medical problems, job or family-related stress, anxiety, and depression. This 8-week program provides tools for responding to the stress associated with illness and everyday life with greater skill and creativity using mindfulness meditation, yoga, and body scan and information about stress, communication, and wellness. Cost:  $40 for faculty, staff, retirees, and spouses/partners. Attend 7 of 8 classes and receive $20 rebate.

Discover the benefits of this innovative approach to weight management through Healthy for Life’s Eat for Life course.  This 10-week program uses mind-body practices (meditations and yoga), the principles of mindful and intuitive eating, skills training, and group support to guide you in making lifestyle changes that will help you create a healthier relationship to your food, mind, and body. If you have a history of chronic dieting, have rigid “healthy” rules about eating, or find yourself eating when you’re stressed, bored, or unhappy, this may be the program for you.

Bicycle Education and Train/On-Road Rides

GetAbout Columbia, in partnership with Columbia Parks and Recreation, has released the fall schedule of bicycle education and trail/on-road rides.  Education classes include City Cycling (classroom and on-road skills courses) Bike Maintenance Series,  Kids’ Mountain Biking 101 and a Kids’ Bike Workshop.  Scheduled rides include the Two Wheeled Tuesday Ride series, MKT Secret Access Trail Rides and a variety of destination rides and special events.

Act Healthy Enrollment is Open Again. Sign Up Now!
Ever wanted to start a new healthy behavior and stick with it?
Do you want to:

Did you hear about the Act Healthy project this past summer? One hundred MU employees enrolled in Act Healthy in June. We are now enrolling 100 additional people. This project is a research study for MU employees sponsored by Healthy for Life: T.E. Atkins UM Wellness Program.

Research participants will be eligible to receive a total of $40 in gift cards. Individuals in the treatment group will attend 6 group meetings over the lunch hour.  Group meetings will be held in the following locations on campus:  Ellis Library, University Hospital, Women and Children’s Hospital area, Agricultural Engineering Building on Rollins St., and Woodrail Center on Nifong and Forum.  For more information, see the flier and view the study consent form.
