Wellness Ambassador Kate Walker selected as Athlete of The Year
Kate Walker, Wellness Ambassador and Campus Facilities Training Coordinator, has recently been selected as the 2012 Show-Me State Games Female Athlete of the Year!  As part of this honor she was entered into the “National Congress of State Games Athlete of Year,” where she was ranked #3 from athletes among 31 states.  Kate will be awarded her Show-Me State Games award at an upcoming Mizzou Football game, tentatively scheduled for the October 6th game.

So, here’s a big “Congratulations!” to Kate for this recognition of all her hard work!

Become a self-management leader
Attend a FREE instructor training to help individuals learn how make exercise a part of their regular routine. The Central Missouri Regional Arthritis Center (CEMRAC) is looking for volunteers to lead Walk with Ease and/or the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program in your community.  In return, CEMRAC will cover the cost of your training and provide materials for your class.

Walk with Ease
Walk with Ease is designed to help people living with arthritis better manage their pain.  It’s also ideal for people without arthritis who want to make walking a regular habit.  Research shows that walking is not only good for joints, but also helps improve the health of the heart, lungs and bones.  Walking can also help manage weight which can reduce one’s risk of arthritis in the knee, heart disease and diabetes.  Walk with Ease is a structured walking program that offers support, information and tools to help participants develop successful exercise routines.  During the program, participants will learn proper stretching and pain management techniques, as well as build stamina and walking pace.  The program can even be modified to meet the needs of individual participants so that each person can develop an exercise routine that fits their unique goals.

•    The next Walk with Ease instructor training is scheduled on September 28, 2012 from 12:30 pm – 5:00 pm in Columbia.  Space is limited.

Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program
The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (formerly known as PACE) is designed specifically for people with arthritis but is appropriate for people without arthritis.  It uses gentle activities to help increase joint flexibility and range of motion and help maintain muscle strength.  The program is designed to fit any fitness level – with exercises done while sitting or standing.  The exercises in the program, however, should not replace therapeutic exercises prescribed by a therapist.  Participants previously enrolled in the program have experienced such benefits as increased functional ability, increased self-behaviors, decreased, pain, and decreased depression.

•    The next Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program instructor training is scheduled on September 29, 2012 from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm in Columbia.  Space is limited.

Please feel free to contact me for additional information or to register.  Registration deadline is September 21, 2012.

The Tiger Institute introduces the Columbia Steps Challenge

Epic Mud Run needs volunteers—THIS WEEKEND
Want to be part a large, exciting outdoor event in Columbia? Kids, adults and teams will be running in this year’s Epic Mud Run on Saturday, Sept. 1 and Sunday, Sept. 2. Organizers have positions of all kinds where volunteers can see the start, portions of the race and even the finish. Nearly 100% of all unsolicited racer comments include praise for the volunteers; this is truly what makes these events possible. The racers really appreciate your time because they know and realize they could not pursue this sport without volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please take a second to fill out our Volunteer Inquiry Form. If you or someone you know are interested in volunteering, please contact Michelle Kemp at 573-882-5686 or kempms@healt.missouri.edu. For more information , visit http://epicmudrun.com/info.

Never Give Out Your University Password

Your username and password are the most common means for verifying your identity online.  No one else (including an IT professional) should ever need your login information. Emails requesting your username and/or password are phishing attempts to try to deceive you into providing your credentials.  Here are a few examples of what cyber attackers can accomplish once they have YOUR account information:  they can use your University credentials to gain access to confidential information; send spam or threatening email on your behalf; as well as access, modify, or delete documents stored on your computer or on any other central file server you have permission to access.

If You Receive a Phishing Message…

  • DO NOT reply.  Either delete this message or report it to abuse@missouri.edu.  When reporting phishing, please send the original email as an attachment by dragging and dropping it into a new message box.
  • DO NOT click on links within the message or open any attachments.
  • If you need further assistance, consult your IT support team or the IT Help Desk at 882-5000.

If you are a victim of a phishing scam, reset your password immediately.  For information about resetting passwords visit http://doit.missouri.edu/accounts/passwords.html.  If this vulnerability relates to your University account, you are required to report the incident.  Please review the mandatory reporting requirement at http://doit.missouri.edu/security/response/.
