MULSA Cookbooks $5

MULSA cookbooks are available for $5.00 each.  MULSA has cookbooks available from past printings.  Check out the display cabinet outside of Ellis’ staff lounge.  These books are full of wonderful, tired-and-true recipes that your fellow staff members (past and present) contributed.  If you would like to have one (or both) or are looking for some unique gifts, please contact  Karla Geerlings in 52 Ellis Library (Technical Services – Catalog Dept.).

Action and Information Items from Library Management Team 10/23/12

ACTION ITEM:  LMT resolves to create a new User Services Analyst – entry level position and seek permission to post internally.  If filled by an internal candidate, LMT will request permission to fill the formerly held position.  The staffing plan will be updated. This position will report to LTS and will provide general computer support in Ellis Library and the branches.

INFORMATION ITEM: The search committee for the Library HR Manager will hold interviews for their top candidates in November.  They hope to make a recommendation in early December 2012.

INFORMATION ITEM:  Jim Cogswell has been invited to accompany a delegation from MU Chancellor’s Office to South Africa on a visit to the University of Western Cape (January 2013).

ACTION ITEM:  Ann Riley was designated to work with the salvage team to finalize some quick reference documents related to the Disaster Preparedness, Response and Recovery Manual.

New Job Posting: Digital Curator-Journalism/Mass Media

General Overview:  The University of Missouri Libraries seeks a highly motivated professional to exercise leadership in strategically planning, developing, and implementing policies and practices relating to the management, preservation, and access to digital media and historical documents created by the journalism profession and allied organizations.  Principal duties include formulating and executing a cohesive collection development plan for journalism records in all formats.  Leads in the appraisal, inventory, acquisition and storage of journalism collections and works with Missouri School of Journalism staff and faculty to locate and solicit important primary source materials.  Provides curatorial and archival guidance to programs of the Missouri School of Journalism and affiliated organizations. Assists the University Archivist in developing a business plan to create sustainable archival services for journalism associations and organizations.

The appointment is renewable annually at the discretion of the University.  Circumstances affecting continued employment include, but are not limited to, work performance, fund availability, and educational priorities.

The position is dual-reporting to both the University Archivist and the Executive Director of the Reynolds Journalism Institute, with guidance from the Journalism Librarian, and with an office in the Missouri School of Journalism or the Reynolds Journalism Institute.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MLS from an ALA accredited program or a Master’s Degree in a relevant field of study.
  • Course work in archives or records management with digital materials emphasis.
  • Thorough knowledge of archival and records management procedures and processes.
  • Strong customer service orientation and communication and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently under general supervision and work with people in a collegial, consultative, and collaborative environment.

Preferred Qualifications: (preference will be given to candidates with the strongest combination of the following qualifications)

  • Knowledge of journalism history, photography, broadcasting or related disciplines.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in an academic library setting dealing with digital records.
  • Professional familiarity with current trends in archival preservation as it relates to media holdings and with issues surrounding the creation and management of digital objects in sound and visual formats.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal experience working in groups and across units.
  • Certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists or other certification program.

Healthy for Life Update

Free Blood Pressure Screening Event
The Sinclair School of Nursing and Healthy for Life have partnered to offer a free blood pressure clinic on Tuesday, Nov. 13. From 10 a.m.-1 p.m., you can stop by Memorial Union South, Room 110 without an appointment. School of Nursing students will take your blood pressure and provide educational information, as well as sell pedometers and odometers for Healthy for Life’s Million Step and Ride to Wellness programs. There will be a drawing for prizes for all who receive a blood pressure check.

Free Movie: Weight of the Nation
Make plans to attend the free screening of HBO’s Weight of the Nation on Thursday, Nov. 15 from 5-7 p.m. at the Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services building at 1005 West Worley Street. RSVP by Nov. 9 by calling (573) 874-7345.

If you have a history of chronic dieting, have rigid “healthy” rules about eating, or find yourself eating when you’re stressed, bored, or unhappy, this may be the program for you.

Lower your stress in just 8 weeks
Helping employees manage stress effectively is a key goal of Healthy for Life. The wellness program offers eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction classes at minimal cost to benefit-eligible employees looking to manage today’s busy lifestyles in a healthy way. This is an 8–week class teaching meditation, yoga and other mind-body techniques for managing stress. There is a $40 registration fee, $20 reimbursement if you attend seven of the eight classes.
