Healthy for Life Update

Stress Reduction Program – EARLY ENROLLMENT starts now!
The Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Program is an 8 week class for faculty and staff (and their partner or spouse for no extra fee). Sign up NOW for the next program and learn skills for responding to stress with greater ease and creativity. Formal mindfulness skills (meditation, yoga, body scan) and information about stress, communication, and wellness become your tools for greater health and enthusiasm for life. Participants will be encouraged to engage in daily practice exercises outside of class.

Orientation: Tuesday, September 18 at 5:30
Class: Tuesdays, September 25 – November 13 (5:30 – 7:30 p.m.)
Full day retreat: Saturday, November 3 (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

Cost: $40($20 refunded if you attend 7 of 8 classes).

Learning to Eat for Health and Enjoyment – Online and In Person 10 week classes – ENROLL NOW!
Discover the benefits of this innovative approach to weight management. If you have a history of chronic dieting, have rigid “healthy” rules about eating, or find yourself eating when you’re stressed, bored, or unhappy, this may be the program for you. The Eat for Life 10 week program uses mind-body practices, the principles of intuitive eating, and group support to guide you in making lifestyle changes that will help you create a healthier relationship to your food, mind, and body.

Million Step Pedometer Program
This on-going program is designed for the University of Missouri’s faculty and staff to get moving through counting their steps. For $15, participants will receive a pedometer and a log book. Once you reach 1 million steps, you get to keep the pedometer and you’ll receive a T-shirt, certificate and a $15 refund. There are a variety of prizes for every additional million steps you take—with no limit. To enroll, contact wellness@umsystem.edu.

Ride to Wellness Program
This program is designed for the University of Missouri’s faculty and staff to get moving through counting their miles. For $20, participants will receive an odometer and a log book. Once you reach 500 miles, you get to keep the odometer and you’ll receive a T-shirt, certificate and a $20 refund. There are a variety of prizes for every additional 500 miles—with no limit. City Cycling: PedNet is working with Healthy for Life to help you incorporate biking into your daily activities. City Cycling Class is taught by League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructors who are very experienced in all aspects of biking for transportation and recreation. Whether you are an experienced cyclist or just bike curious, City Cycling will help you bike more, stay active and be Healthy for Life!

Class covers:
• The rules of the road for safe and legal biking.

• Improve safety and avoid crashes through bike handling skill drills.

• Put your new biking expertise to work with an instructor guided ride around town to familiarize you with the rules of the road and bike friendly routes.

City Cycling is a five-hour course available as one weekend morning or two evening sessions. City Cycling consists of on-bike and lecture portions. Class setting and pace are non-competitive, laid back and casual.

Susan G. Komen Mid-Missouri Race for the Cure
Together, we can make an impact! Registration for the 2012 Susan G. Komen Mid-Missouri Race for the Cure is now open!

What: 5k Walk/Run
Where: Mizzou Campus

Who: Everyone!

Cost: Adult early registration is $25 until August 1st (additional $5 to be chip-timed). Children 12 and under are $15 and can participate in both the 5k and the Kids’ Dash, held inside Memorial Stadium! Other registration options include “Sleep in for the Cure” and “Pink in the Pew,” for those who would like to participate, but cannot make it on a Sunday morning.

Prizes are awarded to the largest team and the team with the most money raised. The individual who raises the most money wins a free round-trip ticket from American Airlines!

Seventy-five percent of the funds raised will stay in our local community for breast cancer awareness and education, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and post-treatment support. The remaining 25% is granted out on a national level to fund important research to find a cure for breast cancer. One in eight women will hear the words “You have breast cancer” in their lifetime. • If you are a Coventry member, you are eligible for a discounted rate to enroll in Weight Watchers online. For $55, you can access recipes, tracking tools and chat boards for three months. That’s less than $5 per week!
• Weight Watchers also offers a discount for University of Missouri faculty and staff who enroll through its portal system.

It will then take you to next page where you enter in your personal information and set up your website user ID and password (this user ID and password is just for this registration website). Rethinking the Staff Representative Committee and a Call for Volunteers

At the discussion about the Staff Representative Committee (SRC) on Tuesday, Aug.14, it was decided by the employees in attendance that a working group would be formed to rethink the charge and the composition up of this committee based on the feedback from the recent survey that was administered by SRC.

The working group currently consists of Shannon Cary, Tammy Green and Bette Stuart. If you are interested in joining this group, please contact Shannon Cary by Friday, Aug. 24.
