LIA/LIS Level Increase FYI

It has been a while since we have looked at the LIA/LIS level increase request process. Here are three documents which will help us get reacquainted with the process: Level and Competency Statements (Levels and Competency Statements); Level Assessment Form (Level Assessment Form); and Directions for Determining Competency Levels (Directions for Determining Competency Levels).

To access other documents and information associated with the level increase process, go to http://mulibraries.missouri.edu/staff/admin/classification/reclassification.htm.

As indicated in Jim’s e-mail of 11/2/11, I will work to develop a timeline to guide the process of responding to competency increase requests. I expect that to identify a deadline in spring 2012 by which requests must be submitted. This should provide adequate time for both review and budget planning.

Lastly, I’ve received a suggestion to hold info sessions for individuals in LIA/LIS titles plus their supervisors…that sounds like a good idea to me. Look for announcements in future editions of News Notes.

Announcement From SDC – Group Process Training

What if you could lead meetings in such a way that you produced twice the results in half the time?  Yes, you read that correctly. 🙂

SDC is sponsoring a two-part training series on group process methods. Participants will learn how to more effectively facilitate any kind of group, from committees, to unit or department meetings, and so on. Participation is open to all library employees, regardless of whether you lead meetings or “just” participate in them.

Part I will be conducted by myself and involve three one-hour sessions which introduce you to group process tools and when they are most useful within a meeting.  These three sessions will take place in December and are prerequisites for Part II.

  • Agenda building for efficiency; cause-and-effect diagram, Dec. 6, 2:00 – 3:00 p.m., 4F51-A Ellis
  • Brainstorming; Nominal Group Technique; Affinity diagram, Dec. 13, 2:00 – 3:00 p.m., 4F51-A Ellis
  • Multivoting; Paired Comparisons, Dec. 20, 2:00 – 3:00 p.m., 4F51-A Ellis

Part II will be conducted by Phil Shearrer, Debono Thinking Tools TM Consultant.  Phil also works as a Leadership Development Specialist at MU’s Women and Children’s Hospital. There is no charge to the library for Phil’s presentations.

Phil’s sessions will be half-day skill-building workshops on how to facilitate different meeting types:

  • How to run a problem-solving meeting, Jan. 5, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 4F51-A Ellis Library;
  • How to run a decision-making meeting Jan. 12, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 4F51-A Ellis Library;
  • How to run a creative thinking meeting Jan. 26, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 4F51-A Ellis Library;
  • How to run a group self-assessment meeting Feb. 2, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 4F51-A Ellis Library;

Why target these four topics?

The first three courses give you agenda specific tools required to maximize group interaction for effective discussion and resolution of the three most common meeting types.

The last course helps you candidly assess the effectiveness of your current meetings.

NEW: Individuals who attend all sessions will receive a Certificate of Completion, with copies placed in their personnel files.

How do you register? I will send Outlook meeting notices; simply RSVP. Release time is available with supervisor approval.

Update on Ellis Library Renovation

Starting today, Nov. 4, the Administration Offices are being moved temporarily to 102 Ellis Library (Access Services). 103 Ellis (ILL) will be used for Administration storage space. In the next several weeks all renovation of 104 Ellis (Administration) will be completed. This is primarily painting, removing flooring and re-carpeting. This should be completed by the beginning of December at which time the Administration Offices will be moved back to 104.

After the fall semester is completed, Access Services will move back into their original offices.

In addition, the ceiling in the staff lounge will be replaced next week.

Discovery Tools Presentations

We are entering the last year of the Summon contract.  The MERLIN libraries are reviewing discovery tools and presentations have been scheduled for MERLIN in the Telepresence Rooms.  Given the limited space available in that room, I have scheduled separate demos for the MU Libraries.

In addition to the demos for the discovery tools, the vendors have been asked to present on their open URL resolvers.

The presentations are open to any libraries’ staff member.

Tuesday, November 8, 8:30-11:00 – Room 4G41– WorldCat Local

Friday, November 11,  1:00-3:30  – Room 4F51A – Primo

Tuesday, November 15, 9:30-11:30 – Room 4F51A – Encore Synergy

Wednesday, November 16,  10:30-1:00 – Room 4F51A – EBSCO Discovery

Friday, November 18,  12:30-3:00 – Room 4F51A – Summon

Reminder – Diversity Action Committee Invitation

The Diversity Action Committee invites you to a presentation in conjunction with November’s theme of Native American Heritage Month. Dr. Dennis Kelley, Assistant Professor with the Department of Religious Studies, returns and brings a different topic (see below). Dr. Kelley’s biographical information can be reviewed at http://religiousstudies.missouri.edu/people/kelley.html.

The presentation will take place Thursday, Nov. 10, from 11-12, room 4G41 Ellis Library. Release time is available with supervisor approval. RSPV’s are not required.

Topic:

“The Oral Tradition as Text, History as Myth: Columbus, Thanksgiving, and the Meaning of American Indians”

This talk will explore the relationship between Native and Non-native America in terms of making meaning. Using America’s origin myths, the Columbian event and the Mayflower Colony, we will explore what meaning we as a society make out of the aboriginal inhabitants of this continent, and the use of that meaning in contemporary literary forms, both Native and non-Native.
