Renovation of Ellis Library Elevators

The twin elevators in Ellis Library will be renovated starting Nov. 1 (approximately).  Campus found funding of $3 million for this project and one other similar project on campus. The money has be spent by June 2011. It will takes 12 weeks for each elevator to be renovated, and they will be done one at a time.  The renovation consists of replacement of all the elevator equipment, including the motor on top of building, and the elevator car. If during this process the elevator that is not currently being renovated malfunctions, repair men will be on site to handle these concerns immediately.

We know that this will slow some work processes down, but in the end we will have much better elevators.

If you have any additional concerns, please contact Pat Jones. Cindy Cotner will be handling any ADA issues that arise.

Search Update – Special Collections Librarian/Archivist I (Print Collections)

The search committee for the position of Special Collections Librarian/Archivist has identified another candidate to interview. The candidate’s resumes, cover letters, and reference letters will be forwarded to library staff as part of an Outlook schedule-a-meeting notice. The itinerary and evaluation form will be distributed closer to the interview date. A third candidate was invited to interview but withdrew from the search.

Elspeth Healey will interview Wednesday, Nov. 3. Ms. Hansen recently completed her MSIS at the University of Texas at Austin (Aug. 2010). She has a Masters (2003) and a PhD (2008) in English Language and Literature from the University of Michigan. Dr. Healey’s work experience includes a Public Services Internship at Harry Ransom Center, UT-Austin (2008-2010), a Text Editor for EEBO – Text Creation Partnership, Univ. of Michigan (2005-2008), and a Preservation Assistant at the John Hay Library, Brown University (1997-1999).

Dr. Healey’s presentation will take place from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., room 4F51-A Ellis Library .The topic is “Assuming you believe an academic library’s special collections and rare books department to be an important teaching tool and a resource for scholarly research, what are three concrete ways the Special Collections and Rare Books unit of the MU Libraries can make its collections and services more relevant in the academic curriculum of the University of Missouri?”

MU Policy – HR 411 Voting

With the November 2010 elections date just around the corner, it seems like a good time to review HR 411, the University’s policy on voting and related requests for time off. To highlight the main points:

MU Policy – HR 411 Voting

The main points:

  • Employees may be excused from work for time necessary to allow them to vote (this includes time away for absentee voting, if necessary).
  • This time may be up to, but not exceed, three (3) successive hours for the purpose of voting.
  • Such period of time includes any off-duty time between the opening and closing of the polls (e.g., lunch).
  • Employees shall be paid for any time requiring absence from duty to allow up to three (3) successive hours; provided, however, that such absence is requested prior to the election. Such time must be recorded on a time sheet or a monthly absence form.
  • Supervisors have the right to specify the time an employee may be absent for voting (e.g. for coverage issues).
  • Employees whose work hours permit three (3) successive hours between the opening and closing of the polls when not on duty will not be eligible for any paid time off for the purpose of voting.

Feel free to contact Leo at 882-9166 or agnewl@missouri.edu if additional information is needed.
