Start a Walking Challenge in your Department
Has your department always wanted to start a walking challenge, but didn’t know where to start? Now is your chance! Healthy for Life has Walking Tool Kits hot off the press that will provide you with the tools to begin a walking group or walking challenge in your department. Get your colleagues moving, building camaraderie, and getting healthy. If you would like a copy of the Walking Tool Kit sent to you through campus mail, please email Dee Sanders.

American Heart Association HeartWalk
Mark your calendar for the American Heart Association’s HeartWalk on Aug. 14th.  On that day University faculty and staff along with Boone Hospital Center will join forces as “Healthy Neighbors Walking” to show a commitment to health and wellness. The walk starts at 9 a.m. at Peace Park on the MU campus, located on the corner of Sixth and Elm streets. Donations will also be accepted the day of the event. Register and get a FREE T-shirt to wear at the event. Any funds raised should be brought the day of the Walk:

  • University of Missouri Health Care employees: Sign up online by 12 p.m. on July 30. Shirts will be distributed at MU Health Care facilities during the week of Aug. 9.
  • MU and System faculty and staff: Visit the American Heart Association’s registration website and click on Register and follow the prompts to “Join a Team.” Select Healthy for Life: TE Atkins UM Wellness, which is listed as an option under Company dropdown menu. Get your FREE T-shirt at the Healthy for Life office (205 Heinkel Bldg.) or pick it up the day of the event.

Workplace Fitness Opportunities
Take advantage of these classes that fit your budget. Full payment is due at the beginning of the first class and space is limited. Please contact the instructor directly to register or for questions. All classes are designed so that exercises can be performed in work clothes.

  • Aug. 3-31: Pilates/Yoga (Pi/Yo). Memorial Union (Various Rooms). Classes are Tuesdays from 12:10-12:50 p.m. Cost is $10 for the 5 week session. Pre-registration is required. Blend of Pilates, Yoga, sports stretch, dance stretch, and athletics that will help you burn calories and build muscle. Mat is highly recommended but not necessary email Ashley.
  • Aug. 3-Sept. 7: Zakti. Physics Library room 223. Classes are Tuesdays from 1:10-1:50 p.m. Cost is $12 for the 6 week session. Pre-registration is required. In this class, we utilize strength and long holds to work each nerve bundle of the seven energy centers for a deeper mind body release. Email Ashley to enroll.
  • Aug. 3-17: Flow Yoga (Mat). Ellis Fischel 707A/B. Classes are Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Cost is $9 for the 3 week session. Pre-registration is required. Warming, working, balancing, and stretching, this class is designed to evenly work every area of the body from head to the floor. Mat is highly recommended but not necessary email Ashley.
  • Aug 4-18th: PiYo (Pilates and Yoga). Columbia Regional Hospital, South Pavilion.  Wednesdays from 11:10 to 11:50, $6 for the three week session. Come explore the combination of the core (hips, back, belly) strengthening of Pilates, enhanced with the calm toning of Yoga– for the body and mind.  Mat recommended. No experience necessary.   • Aug. 4-25: Core Conditioning. Memorial Union (Various Rooms). Classes are Wednesdays from 5:20-6:20 p.m. Cost is $12 for the 4 week session. Pre-registration is required. Strengthen, lengthen, and define the entire mid-section of your body while increasing your metabolic rate (open all levels, beginner to intermediate). Mat is highly recommended but not necessary email Ashley.
  • Aug. 4-25: Y-In Balance. Memorial Union (Various Rooms). Classes are Wednesdays from 12:10-12:50 p.m. Cost is $8 for the 4 week session. Pre-registration is required. Targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and even the joints of the body that normally are not exercised very much in a slower, yet active style of yoga practice.   • Aug. 5-19: Core and More. School of Nursing, Room S265. Class meets Thursdays 12:10-12:50 and costs $6 for the three week session. Build crucial core strength, increase mobility, and decrease pain & stress! Mats are recommended, all levels welcome. Click here to sign up with Rebekka Mars.
  • Aug. 9-30: Core Conditioning. Memorial Union (Various Rooms). Classes are Mondays from 12:10-12:50 p.m. Cost is $8 for the 4 week session. Pre-registration is required.   • Aug 18- Sept 8 – MORENet Sampler.   1. August 18: Intro to Yoga— Learn the basic poses that will strengthen and lengthen muscles, improve posture, and calm your mind.  Mat or towel recommended.
  2. August 25: PiYo (Pilates and Yoga).  Come explore the combination of the core (hips, back, belly) strengthening of Pilates, enhanced with the calm toning of Yoga– for the body and mind.  Mat or towel recommended.
  3. September 1: Power Yoga— Holding poses for a longer duration to work through mental blocks while getting a great cardio workout, strengthening, and releasing ALL stresses! Mat or towel recommended.
  4. September 8: Computer Cramps: Learn stretches that can be done at your desk, seated or standing, to ease tension that develops through our upper body from a duration of time spent at a desk.

Save the Dates- Farmers’ Market
The MU Farmers’ Market returns to Lowry Mall on August 26th, September 23rd,  and October 28th.

Vendors from the Columbia Farmers’ Market and Boone County Farmers’ Market will present delicious prepared food, produce and plants. Preserving the Harvest: Water Bath Canning
Colorful peppers, tasty tomatoes, juicy peaches and other fresh produce…are all so easy to preserve. Make plans to attend a water bath canning workshop Tuesday, August 10 from 6 – 8:30 p.m. at the University of Missouri Extension Center, 1012 N. Hwy UU, Columbia  Registration Fee is $15, and all participants must register by August 4. The workshop will include detailed research-based information and recipes for water-bath canning a wide variety of foods, demonstrations and time for answering your preservation questions. Take a Break with Break Pal
Break Pal is an online fitness program that is designed to help you add more fitness into your daily life. Chose your own break interval, and Break Pal will pop up on your computer screen and remind you to exercise. The program will then direct you to a video with an exercise of your choosing. Each exercise only takes between two and five minutes to perform and there’s a variety of exercises from which to choose. Portion Distortion
What’s really in the foods we eat? What exactly is the correct portion size?  Join Paula Vandelicht, Hy-Vee’s Registered Dietitian, for the answer to all these questions and more. Bring your lunch but save room for some portion size sampling activities. Mark your calendar for Wednesday, September 1st at 12 p.m. in the General Services Building – 194 B. Research on Exercise and Statin Treatment
We are seeking overweight men and women between 25 and 59 years of age who do not currently exercise to participate in a study in the Exercise Physiology Laboratory.  The study includes 3 months of taking a statin medication (commonly prescribed to lower cholesterol levels), exercising 5 days a week, or exercising while taking the statin medication.  Participants will receive free health and body fat assessments, a free personalized exercise program, as well as monetary compensation.  For more information, please contact the Exercise Physiology study coordinator at 882-6892 or email umchesexphysstudy@missouri.edu.

Seeking Healthy Men
The Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology is seeking individuals for a study on how different types of weight-bearing exercise affect bone health. We are looking for healthy men, 25-60 years old who are currently participating in 4hr/wk of physical activity for the last 2 years and not currently participating in strength or plyometric (jumping) training .  You will receive free and supervised resistance training or plyometric training, body composition testing, bone mineral density assessment and payment after completing the study. Women’s Fitness Trail Rides
Join the fun on these weekly rides every Thursday, now through August 26. Meet at 6 p.m. at the parking area adjacent to Rio Grande Restaurant, 3306 Broadway Business Park Ct. just to the west of Hy-Vee on W. Broadway. These medium-paced, fitness-focused rides are just for the gals.  Optional social gathering follows to discuss commuting tips and route planning.  Plan to ride for 1 – 1 ½ hours.  No one will be left behind and we do not ride the BIG HILL on Chapel Hill to get to the MKT.  Come learn an EASY and convenient way to the MKT from southwest Columbia. Columbia By Bike
See Columbia from a different view every Monday now through August 23.  Meet at 6 p.m. at the parking area adjacent to Rio Grande Restaurant, 3306 Broadway Business Park Ct.  just to the west of Hy-Vee on W. Broadway. Join us for on-road rides highlighting bike routes, bike lanes and low traffic routes, designed to help you get where you want to go by bike.  Routes will vary each week. Confident City Cycling Course
Take your pick at two Confident City Cycling courses on July 31 from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. or July 26, Aug 2 & Aug 9  @ 6-9 p.m. Ready to move from the trails to the streets? Thinking of commuting by bike? Confidence is key. This class includes something for everyone, even the most seasoned bicyclist. Please bring your bicycle and helmet to each class. Must be 14 years or older. You can register for these classes via Columbia’s Parks and Recreation Department. If you have trouble with registering online, please register by phone at 573-303-1033.
