Ellis Library Food & Beverage Policy

We need your help with enforcing our food & beverage policy. As you all know the library itself and its contents can be easily damaged (books, computers, carpets, furniture etc.). So if you see a student not following the policy, just give them a quick reminder if you will. Here is a refresher on the library’s food & beverage policy for students. “No” food above the ground level and only approved beverage containers (examples: screw tops bottles plastic and glass, travel coffee mugs and water bottles) on floors 1 through 4. You can refer them to the displays at both entrances and by the second floor twin elevators on what beverage containers are approved and unapproved.

Thank you all for your support,
Ellis Library Security

America and Mizzou Recycles!

Nov. 15 is America Recycles Day, the only day dedicated to nationally recognize and encourage both recycling and buying secondhand products. Established in 1997, the effort now has millions of Americans, including Mizzou students, faculty and staff, pledging to increase their recycling habits at home and at work. On any given day, Mizzou recycles about 5 tons and discards an additional 4 tons of recyclables. Get in and maintain the reduce-reuse-recycle mentality and activity. Help reduce MU’s waste-impact on our environment. To learn more, see www.cf.missouri.edu/ls/recycle. Every little bit helps. Thanks for doing your part. Ellis Library is going green, so staff notice where you can locate the nearest recycle bins by your department.

New Virtual Conference Room to Be Located in Ellis Library

The president of the University of Missouri system has donated $1 million to help finance a project to link students, professors and administrators at the university’s four campuses by creating virtual conference rooms. The MU virtual conference room will be located in Ellis Library.

The Government Documents Microfiche “Cave” on the 1st floor of Ellis Library is being dismantled in order to make space for this new video conferencing center. Some microformat collections are being moved from that room to off site storage, some collections are moving to the Engineering Library, some are moving to a storeroom on Ellis’ ground floor and a small amount of remaining collections will be moved closer to the Government Documents office. Shelves around the perimeter of Room 201 will be a temporary holding area for microcard collections which are destined for off site storage. The Documents Cave is scheduled to be cleared by the end of December. Construction on the new video conferencing center may begin as early as January 2009.

Preservation Committee’s Trip to Jeff City

On October 27th, the Preservation Committee traveled to Jefferson City to tour the Missouri State Archives. Lisa Fox, the Senior Conservator, lead the tour, which included the Reading Room, the Archives’ stacks and the Records Management area. The highlight of the tour, though, was the preservation lab where the Committee spoke with the on-staff conservators and saw some of the processes used at the lab.

Volunteers Needed for Celebration of Service Working Group

Library Administration has decided to create a small group of MU Libraries employees to plan and implement the 2009 Celebration of Service event in the spring. This group will consist of two representatives from Administration (Shannon Cary and Mark Ellis), one representative from MULSA (to be announced), one additional staff member from any department and one librarian.

If you are interested in volunteering for this group, please contact Shannon Cary (carysn@missouri.edu) by November 14.
