Tornado Procedures

70% of tornadoes in Missouri occur between the months of March and June. Further, May is the peak month of tornado activity1, making this the perfect time to remind staff of our tornado procedures. Please be aware of these the next time a tornado watch or warning is issued.

  • Your department will be notified via the West Security Desk of a tornado watch. At this time, review the following procedures.
  • In the event of a tornado warning, the civil alert sirens will sound, and a PA announcement will be made telling patrons to evacuate to the tornado safe areas of the library. These include the Colonnade and the hallways surrounding the security office, LTS and the break room.
  • During a tornado warning, security may ask for assistance in keeping patrons in tornado safe areas. This may include checking areas of the library for patrons, keeping patrons away from windows or simply warning patrons exiting the building of the current dangerous weather conditions.
  • When a tornado warning has expired or been lifted, security will make an announcement over the PA system. This does not mean that a tornado watch is no longer in effect so please stay alert for another tornado warning. If you have any questions or concerns about this information, feel free to contact the security office.

Thanks From the Student Library Group

The Student Library Group would like to thank the following staff members for their involvement in the 2nd Annual Student Appreciation Pizza Party on April 11:

Mark Ellis for constant feedback regarding the logistics of the event, as well as helping with the set up, and clean up.

Christina Lindsey for good ideas, escorting the students to pick up the pizza and drinks, collecting money from staff, and helping put away tables.

Duane Bittle for putting seats in the van, and helping to get the tables up the elevator, and taking the heat bags the pizzas were in back to Shakespeare’s, most importantly being extremely willing to help us with any request.

Jeremy Clark for backing the van out of the driveway, putting seats in the van, and helping us get the food and drinks on a cart and into the building, and taking the heat bags the pizzas were in back to Shakespeare’s, most importantly being extremely willing to help us with any request.

Karla Geerlings for great advice on how to set up the lounge, for taking action and helping us when we needed it most.

Ernest Shaw for helping put away tables.

It’s amazing how many people were around to help make this a smooth and successful event.

Thank You!

Kudos to Deb Ward

Deb Ward recently received congratulations for her work as she stepped down from her role as Vice President for Information Resources in the Family Physicians Inquiries Network Consortium. (www.fpin.org) As of April 2, 2008, her role will change to that of FPIN Librarian Community Advisor. Deb received letters and notes from several chairs of family medicine departments across the nation praising her for her role in establishing the consortium in 2000, and in particular, creating and building the FPIN Librarian Community of the consortium.

We are pleased to note Deb’s many accomplishments in building FPIN, a national network of family practice physicians and librarians committed to gathering and summarizing research to address the most important questions encountered by doctors in their daily practice. Deb’s level of professionalism and leadership among our librarians is an example of the achievement we strive for as the state flag-ship institution.

Most of Deb’s FPIN work was done in addition her already heavy work load, which meant that she worked far more than a typical work week. Deb is hoping to have more personal time as a result of stepping down from her Vice President role in FPIN. Please join me in congratulating her on her accomplishments.

Vounteers Needed for National Library Week Party

The Communications Committee is sponsoring the MU Libraries 2nd Annual National Library Week Celebration at Ellis Library. From 11 a.m. to about 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, we will be handing out punch, cupcakes and other goodies, such as Post-It notes and pencils, to the patrons of Ellis Library. This will take place in the colonnade near the North Entrance.

For those of you who don’t remember or weren’t around, we did this last year, and the patrons were very excited about free cupcakes and surprised that there is such a thing as National Library Week.

Due to everyone’s busy schedule, the members of the Communications Committee are asking for help in handing out treats to our patrons. We especially need volunteers from 12 – 1:30 p.m. Please contact Shannon Cary at carysn@missouri.edu if you would like to help.

Even if you don’t have time to volunteer, we encourage everyone to stop by for a cupcake!

And don’t forget to wear your MU Libraries t-shirt on Wednesday to demonstrate your pride during National Library Week.
