From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation, Feb. 8

Wednesday, February 8 at 7:00pm
Ellis Library, 114A

Speaker: Keeanga-Yamatta Taylor

In her new book, activist and scholar Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor surveys the historical and contemporary ravages of racism and persistence of structural inequality such as mass incarceration and black unemployment. In this context, she argues that this new struggle against police violence holds the potential to reignite a broader push for black liberation.

Taylor is assistant professor of African American studies at Princeton University. She is working on a book, Race for Profit: Black Housing and the Urban Crisis of the 1970s. She earned a Ph.D from the Department of African American Studies at Northwestern University in 2013, and was the Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

You’re Invited to a Community Conversation

What would improve your quality of life? That’s the question Daniel Boone Regional Library staff will be asking at a series of community conversations to be held in Boone and Callaway Counties during February. One has been scheduled specifically for academic library staff on Wednesday, February 15 at 10 a.m. at Ellis Library.

Please come to this informal one-hour session that will be led by a Daniel Boone Regional Library librarian who will ask conversation-starting questions. The library’s long-range planning team will review all the ideas and comments that come up, look for trends, set goals and brainstorm ways the library can enhance its current services.

“We’re starting our strategic planning process, and we want to know how the library can better serve the community,” said Melissa Carr, Daniel Boone Regional Library director. “By asking general questions about our communities as a whole, we can take a look at how the library might fit into the overall picture.” The new plan will begin 2018.

If you can’t attend this meeting, you’re welcome to fill out a brief online survey, attend one of the public community forums or host your own community conversation among friends, family or co-workers. Find details at www.dbrl.org/conversations.

Black History FUNRaiser on February 28

The Black History Month Trivia FUNRaiser, which has become a tradition at Mizzou, caps the events of February. From 6 to 9 p.m. on February 28 in Ellis Library’s room 114A, teams will compete for prizes, which include donations to the charities of their choice.

You do not have to be a black history expert to enjoy the the evening's activities, which include comradery, friendly competition and refreshments, and you will definitely learn something! However, attending some of the events on the Black History Month Calendar will be an advantage since one category of questions is always developed relevant to these scheduled presentations.

The FUNRaiser’s coordinators cordially invite you to form a team of five to eight members. If you register your team by January 31, you can also suggest questions for the event. Follow the link http://libcal.missouri.edu/event/3091394 to register and see details specific to the FUNRaiser including which charities are eligible for consideration.

Please include the FUNRaiser on your calendar and we look forward to seeing you on February 28.
