Jim Cogswell has served as Director of Libraries at the University of Missouri since April, 2002. He oversees all operations of eight libraries (excluding the Law Library) on the MU campus. The MU Libraries have a total operating budget of $17.4 million; collections of over 3.35 million print volumes, forty-five thousand current journal subscriptions; and a staff of 150 FTE permanent positions with some 30 FTE student positions. Reporting directly to the University Provost, he serves on the Council of Deans.

He came to this position from the University of Minnesota/Twin-Cities, where he had served as Assistant University Librarian for Collection Development since 1996, and as Division Head for Reference and Information Services, from 1987 to 1996. His previous library positions include service at Princeton University (1978-1987) and at the University of Pennsylvania (1974-1978).

He holds a Bachelor's degree in History from Bowdoin College, and a Master's degree in Library Service from Rutgers University. He also earned a post-graduate Certificate in Management from the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania.
