| Description: | James Fordyce's Sermons to Young Women was a staple in home libraries of the late eighteenth century. The book was so popular that it featured in a humorous episode in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, during which the pompous Mr. Collins attempts to read the sermons to the young Bennett ladies. The youngest, Lydia, interrupts him so frequently that he is unable to continue. Our copy is particularly fascinating because it belonged to a nineteenth-century attorney who seems to have appreciated it just as much as Mr. Collins did. He wrote his name (L. Buck, LL.D.) on the front pastedown, annotated the text throughout, and on the front flyleaf inscribed: "This Book ought to be read again and again by every young lady in the Kingdom. I do not know any Praise too great, that can be given to the Author of it." |
| Condition/Repair: | There is tape on the spine, but the text blocks are in fine shape, and the sewing is intact. The conservator will make Japanese tissue repairs on volume 1, and reback volume 2 in leather. |
