| Description: | John Taylor, self-styled as the "Water Poet," was a member of the Waterman's Company, a guild of workers who rowed passengers and freight along the Thames. Throughout his career, he promoted himself as a lowly riverman who aspired to poetry and connections with the men of letters of the day. He published prolifically, usually in pamphlet form, and was not above publicity stunts such as sailing down the Thames in a boat made of brown paper. His larger-than-life image perhaps helped him to gain royal patronage for the Watermen and a comfortable living for himself. Taylor audaciously published his Collected Works in 1630, at the height of his career. |
| Condition/Repair: | One of the covers is detached, and there are some loose sections at the front. The book has already been rebacked at least twice in its history. The conservator will make repairs with Japanese tissue to maintain the character of the binding and reattach the loose cover and pages. |
