Description: This 1884 edition of the famous Atala by Chateaubriand was illustrated by Gustave Dore. Chateaubriand, the father of French Romanticism first published Atala in 1801 was inspired by his travels in North America. It has been acted out on stage and translated into many different languages.
Condition/Repair: Very weak binding, broken at sewing joints. The conservator disbound the book so that it could be used as a series of folios and converted the original binding into a case.
