Travels through the states of North America, and the provinces of Upper and Lower Canada, during the years 1795, 1796, and 1797
Published: London, Printed for J. Stockdale, 1800
Description: Weld arrived in Philadelphia in 1795, and explored the mid-Atlantic states before venturing further North, up the St. Lawrence river. This work contains not only details of this trip, the land, and the Native Americans he encountered, but also his meetings with Jefferson and Washington. Weld was an Irish topographer and British Loyalist, and while this account is not an especially positive one, it reportedly led many Irishmen to emigrate to the newly-formed United States. It was a very popular book, which came out in many English editions, and was translated and printed in French, Dutch, and German shortly after the first English edition. There are multiple fold-out maps, plans of cities, and views.
