Description: Jane Porter, sister of author Anna Maria Porter, wrote Thaddeus of Warsaw, considered to be the first historical novel. In 1801 she published The Scottish Chiefs, which is a fictionalized account of William Wallace's fight against Edward I. The book gathered her international fame; Sir Walter Scott confessed that it was his inspiration for writing Waverly, while Napoleon banned it in France, fearing it would lead to insurrection. This book is often used by undergraduate and graduate classes, and also in faculty research.
Condition/Repair: Both volumes have detached and loose covers along with weak sewing in the spines. The conservator recommends kozo repairs to both.
