Serials Reduction Project 2006

SERIALS REDUCTION PROJECT 2006

Project Rationale

The MU Libraries, along with many research libraries across the U.S., are facing a deficit in our budget. The costs of running a first-rate research library, combined with decreasing state support, have forced us to make cuts in staffing, hours, equipment and supplies, and materials (books, serials, databases, etc.). One of the areas where costs continue to spiral upward is serials.

Serials/journals make up approximately 80% of our serials and monographs budget.  For FY05 serials consumed approximately 83% of total serial and monographic (book) expenditures. The MU Libraries’ actual expenditure for FY05 for serials was $4,636,091 as compared to $964,293 for monographs (taken from the latest available ARL data.
