Confederate Mothers Raising Children Through the War
Everyday, as confederate soldiers were losing their lives on the battlefields, mothers and women would have to develop what were once skills that were improper for a woman to have. Confederate mothers especially felt an obligation to contribute to the war out of affection from their southern pride. They would do things such as sewing graments and bandages for the confederate soldiers and volunteering to aid wounded soldiers. By doing so, mothers taught their children that the cause the Confederates were fighting for was so important, that both men and women should do everything they can for the cause.
Still heavily influenced by the "Lost Cause" ideology, a young female student blurts her initial thoughts of the war. She does not express anything too radical regarding her thoughts on enslavement and equality, but it is when she shares an opinion that does not match that of her southern atmosphere. Earlier in the article, it is mentioned that this is not the first time the girl has expressed an unpopular opinion. Once she even questions the authority of both God and the president. Because of her inability to be silent and submissive, her story is titled Sassy Little Rebel. The way she was raised and the time in which she was raised plays a big role on her nickname and the way people viewed her.
