Men of the South
While fighting may have been the most dramatic aspect of a soldier's life, most of the war was spent doing more mundane aspects of life like traveling, camping, cooking, and other daily activities. Further, while some men experienced the heat of battle and military life, others experienced the war as civilians and witnesses. Indeed, in some way, shape, or form, the Civil War affected everyone that lived through it, and the sources in this collection reflect these varied experiences. Be day-to-day in a military camp or daily life at home, these sources are composed of letters between family members, diaries and journals, and recollections and remembrances that document what life was like during the Civil War.
