Title

Sketches of the war: a series of letters to the North Moore Street School of New York.

Description

“Although these letters were addressed to school children, they give a close-up view of the country and inhabitants of northwestern Tennessee and western Kentucky. Nott, a resident of New York City at the outbreak of the Civil War, went to St. Louis and became captain of the Fifth Iowa Cavalry. He found much Unionism among the Southern people he visited on foraging raids, became quite friendly with them, and reproduces conversations that seem to be authentic.”
