Description

“January 1, 1863-October 24, 1866. From her home in Bladensburg, MD, the young daughter of a pro Confederate family reported news of the Gettysburg campaign and observed Early's Washington raid. In December 1864, she received a pass to visit a family in Pendleton, SC, where she remained for the duration. In South Carolina, she recorded prices of food; despondency among the people; the flight of the formerly wealthy; and such rumors as plans to divide abandoned plantations among the freedmen.”
