Conclusion

     General Sherman and the army of the West were pivotal to winning the Civil War for the Union. His tactics and strategy during the March to the Sea ensured the destruction of the Confederacy and helped turn the tide of the war. 

     Sherman ensured destruction through hard war and little mercy. His sieges and burnings of major cities like Atlanta and Savannah destroyed both the supply hubs that they were and southern morale. 

Sherman's March to the Sea cost the lives of many in the South and destroyed the infrastructure for a long time to come.
