Title

Sketches of the Rise, Progress, and Decline of Secession: With a Narrative of Personal Adventures Among the Rebels

Description

“During the latter part of 1861, this fiery Knoxville newspaper editor became so obnoxious to the confederates that he sought safety in the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. Being induced to come back to Knoxville he was arrested and imprisoned in the local jail until it seemed advisable to allow him to retire to his home in the city because of poor health. In March 1862, the Confederates decided to let him go North and Brownlow was escorted by a guard to the Federal lines near Nashville. This is an extremely virulent account of Brownlow’s experiences with the Confederates in East Tennessee and it had an important effect on Northern enthusiasm for the war.”
