"September 1, 1861-March 22, 1862. Nashville. The Pearl family, who had migrated to Nashville from the North in the mid-1850s, was split by sectional antagonisms. In 1861 Mr. Pearl took the daughters to Detroit. John, the son, joined the 1st (Field's) Tennessee Infantry. Louisa remained in Nashville to try to save their home from the war. Mrs. Pearl recorded her concern for her family as well as conditions in Nashville during the Federal occupation."
