Description
“Only edition. Cumming is best known for her JOURNAL OF HOSPITAL LIFE IN THE CONFEDERATE ARMY OF TENNESSEE (1866), valuable and informative work on her nursing duties during the latter part of the Civil War. Written nearly 30 years later, GLEANINGS FROM SOUTHLAND combines lengthy extracts from the JOURNAL with original reminiscences. The primary focus of GLEANINGS, like that of the earlier work, is on field and hospital work during the war. "It is more than a quarter of a century since these events transpired, and they come up before me as vividly as they did then and will not down at my bidding. I know but too well the truthfulness of what I write, and wish from my heart I was penning some romance; but no, these were the stern realities that were transpiring daily and hourly in every hospital North and South. God grant that this great, united land may never pass such another four years, either in foreign or civil wars."
