If you have questions, email Glenda at MoumG@missouri.edu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wellness Ambassador Kate Walker selected as Athlete of The Year<\/strong><br \/>\nKate Walker, Wellness Ambassador and Campus Facilities Training Coordinator, has recently been selected as the 2012 Show-Me State Games Female Athlete of the Year!\u00a0 As part of this honor she was entered into the \u201cNational Congress of State Games Athlete of Year,\u201d where she was ranked #3 from athletes among 31 states.\u00a0 Kate will be awarded her Show-Me State Games award at an upcoming Mizzou Football game, tentatively scheduled for the October 6th game.<\/p>\n<p>So, here\u2019s a big \u201cCongratulations!\u201d to Kate for this recognition of all her hard work!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Become a self-management leader<\/strong><br \/>\nAttend a FREE instructor training to help individuals learn how make exercise a part of their regular routine. The Central Missouri Regional Arthritis Center (CEMRAC) is looking for volunteers to lead Walk with Ease and\/or the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program in your community.\u00a0 In return, CEMRAC will cover the cost of your training and provide materials for your class.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Walk with Ease<\/strong><br \/>\nWalk with Ease is designed to help people living with arthritis better manage their pain.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also ideal for people without arthritis who want to make walking a regular habit.\u00a0 Research shows that walking is not only good for joints, but also helps improve the health of the heart, lungs and bones.\u00a0 Walking can also help manage weight which can reduce one&#8217;s risk of arthritis in the knee, heart disease and diabetes.\u00a0 Walk with Ease is a structured walking program that offers support, information and tools to help participants develop successful exercise routines.\u00a0 During the program, participants will learn proper stretching and pain management techniques, as well as build stamina and walking pace.\u00a0 The program can even be modified to meet the needs of individual participants so that each person can develop an exercise routine that fits their unique goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The next Walk with Ease instructor training is scheduled on September 28, 2012 from 12:30 pm \u2013 5:00 pm in Columbia.\u00a0 Space is limited.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (formerly known as PACE) is designed specifically for people with arthritis but is appropriate for people without arthritis.\u00a0 It uses gentle activities to help increase joint flexibility and range of motion and help maintain muscle strength.\u00a0 The program is designed to fit any fitness level \u2013 with exercises done while sitting or standing.\u00a0 The exercises in the program, however, should not replace therapeutic exercises prescribed by a therapist.\u00a0 Participants previously enrolled in the program have experienced such benefits as increased functional ability, increased self-behaviors, decreased, pain, and decreased depression.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The next Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program instructor training is scheduled on September 29, 2012 from 8:00 am &#8211; 5:00 pm in Columbia.\u00a0 Space is limited.<\/p>\n<p>Please feel free to contact me for additional information or to register.\u00a0 Registration deadline is September 21, 2012.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Tiger Institute introduces the Columbia Steps Challenge <\/strong><br \/>\nOver 3,600 Columbians spent the summer losing weight and getting fit by participating in the Columbia Slimdown Challenge. Are you looking for some health and wellness motivation? This fall, Tiger Institute will offer the Columbia Steps Challenge, a fun competition to help you get active, stay healthy and make yourself and your teammates proud. The Steps Challenge is a free 12-week competition where all Columbians, ages 13 and up, work in teams of 4-6 people to get active and use pedometers to compete on the number of steps taken. Great prizes will be awarded on a bi-weekly basis with a grand prize awarded to the top team.\u00a0 The competition is managed online using a real-time scoreboard.\u00a0 If you are interested in participating, please visit www.columbiastepschallenge.com to learn more and register your team beginning on Monday, September 3rd.\u00a0 The competition will start on September 17th and end on December 17th, 2012.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Epic Mud Run needs volunteers\u2014THIS WEEKEND<\/strong><br \/>\nWant to be part a large, exciting outdoor event in Columbia? Kids, adults and teams will be running in this year\u2019s Epic Mud Run on Saturday, Sept. 1 and Sunday, Sept. 2. Organizers have positions of all kinds where volunteers can see the start, portions of the race and even the finish. Nearly 100% of all unsolicited racer comments include praise for the volunteers; this is truly what makes these events possible. The racers really appreciate your time because they know and realize they could not pursue this sport without volunteers.
