{"id":4977,"date":"2012-05-11T10:09:05","date_gmt":"2012-05-11T16:09:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mulibraries.missouri.edu\/newsnotes\/?p=4977"},"modified":"2012-05-11T10:09:05","modified_gmt":"2012-05-11T16:09:05","slug":"library-assembly-meeting-minutes-april-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/library.missouri.edu\/newsnotes\/2012\/05\/11\/library-assembly-meeting-minutes-april-24\/","title":{"rendered":"Library Assembly Meeting Minutes, April 24"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Attending- <em>Members:<\/em> Gary Cox, Mark Ellis, Karen Witt, PT Martin, June DeWeese, Laura Buck, Mary Hainen, Stephen Clayton, Dana Houston, Libby Myer, Anne Barker, Stephen Stanton. <em>Ex officio<\/em>: Deb Ward, Ann Riley, Jim Cogswell. <em>Guest:<\/em> Nathan Marticke<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MU Libraries Director of Development Nathan Marticke \u2013introduced himself to the Assembly.\n<ul>\n<li>Nathan started at MU Libraries on March 5, 2012.<\/li>\n<li>Most recently was Regional Director of Development at William Jewell College, Liberty, MO.<\/li>\n<li>He was born and raised in Missouri.<\/li>\n<li>Worked at University of Central Florida.<\/li>\n<li>Has been a fundraising for higher education since he graduated college.<\/li>\n<li>Undergraduate degree from Northwest Missouri State University (in Maryville) in Marketing.<\/li>\n<li>Graduate degree from Park University (Parkville, MO) in Communication and Leadership.<\/li>\n<li>Looks forward to the new campaign and working with everyone.<\/li>\n<li>Nathan finds \u201cmaking connections\u201d the most rewarding aspect of fundraising.<\/li>\n<li>His first impression of MU Libraries is that it is filled with highly dedicated individuals.\n<ul>\n<li>He was struck by the number of employees who have been here for many years.\n<ul>\n<li>That speaks very highly of the Libraries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Director Announcements \u2013 Jim Cogswell:\n<ul>\n<li>Library Student Fee update: Last week, Jim and Library individuals (Ann Riley, Deb Ward, Darell Schmick and Ashley Nelson) met with GPC and MSA representatives.\n<ul>\n<li>End result = a small group to work over the summer to create a formal student fee proposal to be voted on by the students in the Fall of 2012.\n<ul>\n<li>A campaign will start three months or so prior to open election.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Recent articles about the Student Fee discussion were highlighted in the Maneater:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.themaneater.com\/stories\/2012\/4\/20\/library-student-fee-under-consideration-msa-gpc\/\">http:\/\/www.themaneater.com\/stories\/2012\/4\/20\/library-student-fee-under-consideration-msa-gpc\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.themaneater.com\/stories\/2012\/3\/16\/msa-gpc-form-committee-discuss-possible-library-st\/\">http:\/\/www.themaneater.com\/stories\/2012\/3\/16\/msa-gpc-form-committee-discuss-possible-library-st\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.themaneater.com\/stories\/2012\/4\/20\/library-fee-campaign-needs-education-promotion\/\">http:\/\/www.themaneater.com\/stories\/2012\/4\/20\/library-fee-campaign-needs-education-promotion\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Mizzou Center in Blue Springs, MO.\n<ul>\n<li>An \u201coutpost\u201d in the KC area.\n<ul>\n<li>Will soon be breaking ground for a new 30,000 ft. building.<\/li>\n<li>There will be a library\/information center.\n<ul>\n<li>MU Libraries were invited to partner with Mid-Continent Public Library to create\/share a library presence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>UMKC chose not to take part.\n<ul>\n<li>They see this as a Mizzou centered outpost.\n<ul>\n<li>Different from UMKC mission\/degree specialty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Many institutions have similar centers in Kansas City already.\n<ul>\n<li>And around the state in Metro areas\/centers.\n<ul>\n<li>Including MU \u2013 and more are likely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Council of Deans\/Provost Staff retreat planned for August, 2012.\n<ul>\n<li>The two groups will hold a joint retreat this year to look at MU Progress in relation to its strategic plan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>New Mizzou capital campaign to begin soon.\n<ul>\n<li>There is a new Vice Chancellor For Development and Alumni Relations &#8211; \u00a0Thomas Hiles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>MU Library Society Dinner took place April 13<sup>th<\/sup> \u2013 guest speaker Nick Basbanes.\n<ul>\n<li>Well received \u2013 he is an authority on books\/book collecting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Friends of the Library Luncheon was held, April 14<sup>th<\/sup>.\n<ul>\n<li>Speaker: Gary Ellis \u2013 expert in Missouri music since the Civil war.<\/li>\n<li>Friends of the Libraries Presented awards to Stuckey Essay contest winners.<\/li>\n<li>They also presented awards for the second annual undergraduate research essay contest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Libraries will seek to fill the Library Human Resources Coordinator position.\n<ul>\n<li>Some consideration will be given to the role of this position at the Libraries.<\/li>\n<li>Employees can turn to Sheena Waggoner for HR matters after Leo leaves and until the position is filled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>MU Libraries has co-sponsored a visit from poet Toi Derricotte this week in honor of National Poetry Month.\n<ul>\n<li>Ms. Derricotte visited the classes of Dr. Cornelius Eady, MU English Department, yesterday, April 23<sup>rd<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li>Today, April 24<sup>th<\/sup>, she performed a reading in Ellis Library and will take part in events this evening at the Berlin Theatre (Caf\u00e9 Berlin &#8211; on Orr St.).<\/li>\n<li>Other sponsors included:\n<ul>\n<li>The MU Chancellor\u2019s Distinguished Visitor\u2019s Program.<\/li>\n<li>Cave Canem.<\/li>\n<li>MU Theater Department.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>MU Libraries will be receiving Chinese Language and Culture Books as a gift from the Confucius Institute at the end of May, 2012.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Staff Representative Committee \u2013 PT Martin.\n<ul>\n<li>SRC was active in the past but has drifted for a while.<\/li>\n<li>As the most recently elected chair, PT would like to revive the committee and help identify a new role.\n<ul>\n<li>Original SRC was linked to Library Council.<\/li>\n<li>Somewhat recently established Library Assembly takes on the communication role that, at one time, was assigned to SRC.<\/li>\n<li>Miscellaneous feedback indicates that there may still be a role for SRC at MU Libraries (ombudsman role, welcoming new employees, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>Survey should give a better indicator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Elaine Huntsucker of the Cataloging department has helped put together a survey for MU Libraries employees.\n<ul>\n<li>Gets a sense of employees\u2019 perception of SRC.<\/li>\n<li>What they would like to see SRC\u2019s role become.<\/li>\n<li>Survey should go out this week.<\/li>\n<li>Jim Cogswell applauds the effort.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>General Announcements:\n<ul>\n<li>Laura Buck &#8211; RAIS:\n<ul>\n<li>Events:\n<ul>\n<li>MU Libraries will host guests from Washington University, in St. Louis.\n<ul>\n<li>Will be accompanied by a visiting Librarian from South Africa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Federal Depository 150<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary Event, Thursday, May 3<sup>rd<\/sup>, at 1:30 pm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Positions:\n<ul>\n<li>Working out the specifics and hoping to post a Clinical Veterinary Medicine Librarian soon.\n<ul>\n<li>Working in cooperation with Vet School.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>E-learning librarian position \u2013 Hoping to post fulltime position soon.\n<ul>\n<li>Annelise Freeman has temporarily held that position.<\/li>\n<li>Working in cooperation with Jim Spain in Undergraduate Studies office.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>June DeWeese \u2013 Access Services.\n<ul>\n<li>Circulation offices, Reserve and ILL areas (Rooms 102, 103 and 101) are scheduled have furniture moved in on May 15<sup>th<\/sup>.\n<ul>\n<li>Both the return of damaged furniture as well as new replacement items.<\/li>\n<li>Will be second day of intersession (a busy processing time for Access Services).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>[UPDATE \u2013 from June DeWeese: The return\/delivery of Access Services furniture will take place approximately a week later than was reported.] <\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ann Riley \u2013 Access, Collections and Technical Services:\n<ul>\n<li>Digitization Interest Group \u2013 Felicity Dykas and Kelli Hansen have started a Digitization Interest Group.
