{"id":10517,"date":"2017-03-10T19:35:20","date_gmt":"2017-03-10T19:35:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/library.missouri.edu\/newsnotes\/?p=10517"},"modified":"2017-03-10T19:55:42","modified_gmt":"2017-03-10T19:55:42","slug":"electronic-resources-libraries-online-conference-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/library.missouri.edu\/newsnotes\/2017\/03\/10\/electronic-resources-libraries-online-conference-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Electronic Resources &amp; Libraries Online Conference 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\">\n\t<strong>Monday, April 3<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>8:00-9:15&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Keynote: Data Violence: Dignity, Discrimination and Algorithmic Identity<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>Room 4F51A&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Speaker:&nbsp; Anna Lauren Hoffman\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tToday, our &ldquo;data doubles&rdquo;&mdash;algorithmically-generated,&nbsp;computation-friendly versions of our identities produced by and through digital data&mdash;present new challenges for social justice.&nbsp;Among these challenges is the problem of promoting dignity and self-respect, values that provide individuals and groups&nbsp;with a sense that their identities and experiences are valuable and their goals are worth pursuing.&nbsp;For vulnerable or marginalized&nbsp;populations, dignity and self-respect can be undermined by violent&nbsp;actions, symbols, or cultural ideas promoted through mass media, law and policy, or&mdash;increasingly&mdash;the design of data-intensive systems that seek to sort, evaluate, and rank&nbsp;people according to opaque or biased criteria.&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn this talk,&nbsp;I position&nbsp;&ldquo;data doubles&rdquo; as sites of potential violence&mdash;especially when they conflict with our own moral&nbsp;self-perceptions, ideas, and beliefs in ways that implicate our dignity. Through an examination of&nbsp;1) historical human rights abuses perpetrated through population data, 2) current critical discussions of surveillance, algorithms, and data ethics, and 3) the experiences of transgender women navigating systems&nbsp;that fail to account for their particular identities and bodies, I show how&nbsp;institutionalized and other biases work in and through data-driven systems&nbsp;to deprive certain people of&nbsp;what philosopher John Rawls called &ldquo;the social bases of self-respect.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<br \/>\n\t<strong>10:00-10:45&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Marketing Your Library&rsquo;s Digital Resources<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>Room 4F51A&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Speaker:&nbsp; Clint Chamberlain, Eleanora Dubicki\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSocial media, newsletters, events &mdash; librarians are constantly called on to market their collections. Increasingly, authors and researchers are using more-and-less legal scholarly article sharing services to &quot;take back the literature,&quot; or even just to access it more conveniently (Bohannon, 2016). The objective of this study was to evaluate a manageable sample of journal articles across the sciences, social sciences, and humanities for their availability via open access (gold and green), as well as through rogue or pirated versions.
