This collaboration began when Ces\u00e1reo Moreno, curator at the National Museum of Mexican Art (NMMA), reached out about borrowing Mizzou\u2019s copy of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/library.missouri.edu\/specialcollections\/items\/show\/1163\"><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">La\u00a0portentosa\u00a0vida\u00a0de la\u00a0muerte<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (1792) by Fray Joaqu\u00edn Bola\u00f1os. Published in Mexico City, the book\u00a0it\u00a0is now on display in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalmuseumofmexicanart.org\/events\/images-of-faith-2026\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Images of Faith: 3000 Years of Spiritual Expressions in Mexico<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an expansive exhibition exploring centuries of religious and spiritual expression in Mexican culture.\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">La\u00a0portentosa\u00a0vida\u00a0de la\u00a0Muerte<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0personifies\u00a0Death\u00a0as\u00a0it\u00a0goes\u00a0through different life stages to encourage readers to meditate on the inevitability of death. The text combines biblical themes, such as Adam and Eve, with the\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">memento mori<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202ftradition as a preparation for eternal life.\u00a0The book\u00a0contains\u00a018 etchings by Francisco\u00a0Ag\u00fcera\u202fBustamante depicting Death\u00a0in a manner reminiscent of Mexican Day of the Dead iconography.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The exhibition revisits NMMA\u2019s original\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Images of Faith<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0show from 1987 and highlights living traditions of popular faith across time. With the museum preparing to celebrate its 40th anniversary next year, the inclusion of materials from institutions like Mizzou adds depth and historical richness to the exhibition. While these collections are well known within the university, opportunities like this exhibition help introduce them to audiences beyond campus and beyond Missouri. Being able to\u00a0encounter\u00a0a centuries-old volume\u2014its physical presence, craftsmanship, and history\u2014is an experience that cannot be fully replicated digitally. Displaying\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">La\u00a0portentosa\u00a0vida de la\u00a0muerte<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in a major cultural center like Chicago expands access to that experience and underscores the value of preserving and sharing these materials.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In this case, the NMMA requested a specific item that aligned closely with the exhibition\u2019s themes. Exhibition loans are carefully evaluated, with the primary concern always being the long-term well-being of the collections. The borrowing institution provides a detailed facilities report outlining environmental controls, security measures, and display\u00a0conditions. Only works that are stable and suitable for display are approved for loan, ensuring that preservation is never compromised\u00a0in the process of access\u00a0and outreach.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This collaboration continues a long history of Mizzou Special Collections contributing to exhibitions at a range of institutions, including museums, historical societies, and national organizations. Past partners have included the Museum of Art &amp; Archaeology, the State Historical Society of Missouri, the St. Louis Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Park Service.
