The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The circus arrives without warning. No ann<\/span>ouncements precede it. It <\/span>is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des R\u00eaves, and it is only open at night.<\/span><\/p>\n

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway\u2014a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love\u2014a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.<\/span><\/p>\n

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.<\/span><\/p>\n

Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

In 2024, with the world descending into madness and anarchy, one woman begins a fateful journey toward a better future.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lauren Olamina and her family live in one of the only safe neighborhoods remaining on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Behind the walls of their defended enclave, Lauren\u2019s father, a preacher, and a handful of other citizens try to salvage what remains of a culture that has been destroyed by drugs, disease, war, and chronic water shortages. While her father tries to lead people on the righteous path, Lauren struggles with hyperempathy, a condition that makes her extraordinarily sensitive to the pain of others.<\/span><\/p>\n

When fire destroys their compound, Lauren\u2019s family is killed and she is forced out into a world that is fraught with danger. By the time she and her lifelong friend Z\u00f3ra begin to inoculate the children there, she feels age-old superstitions and secrets gathering everywhere around her. Secrets her outwardly cheerful hosts have chosen not to tell her. Secrets involving the strange family digging for something in the surrounding vineyards. Secrets hidden in the landscape itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Natalia is also confronting a private, hurtful mystery of her own: the inexplicable circumstances surrounding her beloved grandfather\u2019s recent death. After telling her grandmother that he was on his way to meet Natalia, he instead set off for a ramshackle settlement none of their family had ever heard of and died there alone. A famed physician, her grandfather must have known that he was too ill to travel. Why he left home becomes a riddle Natalia is compelled to unravel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Grief struck and searching for clues to her grandfather\u2019s final state of mind, she turns to the stories he told her when she was a child. On their weekly trips to the zoo he would read to her from a worn copy of Rudyard Kipling\u2019s The Jungle Book, which he carried with him everywhere; later, he told her stories of his own encounters over many years with \u201cthe deathless man,\u201d a vagabond who claimed to be immortal and appeared never to age. But the most extraordinary story of all is the one her grandfather never told her, the one Natalia must discover for herself. One winter during the Second World War, his childhood village was snowbound, cut off even from the encroaching German invaders but haunted by another, fierce presence: a tiger who comes ever closer under cover of darkness. \u201cThese stories,\u201d Natalia comes to understand, \u201crun like secret rivers through all the other stories\u201d of her grandfather\u2019s life.
