Banned Books Week: Freed Between the Lines

Banned Books Week, September 22-28, was launched in 1982. Typically (but not always) held during the last week of September, the annual event highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community — librarians, educators, authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas.

So what can you do to celebrate Banned Books Week?

  1. Participate in Let Freedom Read Day on September 28th
  2. Check out and/or buy a banned book
  3. Attend Banned Books Week events
  4. Wednesdays at the Library: Banned Books and Intellectual Freedom
Wednesday, September 25, 2024 from 11a -1p in Ellis Library Colonnade

“I believe that censorship is the enemy of freedom. By banning books, we deny ourselves the opportunity to learn from the past and to envision a braver future. Books have the power to open minds and build bridges,” Ava DuVernay, 2024 Honorary Chair of Banned Books Week.
