Moriæ encomium; [the praise of folly]
Published: London, Wilford, 1724.
Description: The Praise of Folly is an essay written in 1509 by Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam and first printed in an expanded version in 1511. The essay was originally written while visiting with Sir Thomas More at his estate in Bucklersbury. Praise of Folly is considered one of the most important books of Western civilization and a stimulus for the Protestant Reformation. Erasmus was amazed at the work’s popularity and influence on Protestants reformers despite his strong opposition to the splintering of Western Christianity. Pope Leo X thought it was humorous and witty.
