The Balance Between Beauty and Destruction
Title
The Balance Between Beauty and Destruction
Creator
McGowan, Makeighless
Abstract
This photography project explores the beauty and
destruction found within urban decay. Inspired by James
Kerwin’s work on Heritage Architecture, I aimed to
capture the weathered surfaces, abandoned structures, and forgotten spaces that define the urban landscape in and around Columbia, MO. I focused on cracked walls,
broken windows, and overgrown plants, as well as the
intricate patterns and textures they create. Although these elements can result in captivating images, they also serve as signs of urban neglect. Through these images, I hope to reflect on the delicate balance between beauty and
destruction in an urban environment.
