I have always thought drag was a beautiful art form, but I didn’t know much about the process that went into its creation. In our current political climate where gender expression and performance are being criminalized, I wanted to bring the viewer behind the curtain into a drag performer’s personal space where they could see the creative aspects and artistry of crafting the persona. In Behind the Curtain, I explore the intimate parts of drag to capture not only the performer but also their environment. For this project I took inspiration from many sources including the photobook of Jess T. Dugan’s, Look at Me Like You Love Me. In this book Dugan combines portraits and still lives to tell a very personal story about relationships, solitude, family, loss, healing, and the transformations that define a life. I employed Dugan’s technique to include still lives of the drag performer’s room and the aftermath of the performance. I’ve always been interested in mixing real life footage with visual effects. For a long time fiction was something that people could only ever write, draw, and imagine, but video and visual effects finally allow us to experience fiction in action as if it was right in front of us. I am a big fan of films that utilize believable and extensive visual effects such as Star Wars or Marvel films. In my own work I try and mirror this sentiment as seen in my submission, “An Unexpected Find”. I’ve always wanted to know how they made lightsaber effects in Star Wars films so when I had the opportunity to submit a video with a flexible prompt to one of my classes, I decided to take it. Learning how the effect works, tracking the shot frame by frame, and editing everything together certainly took a while. But once I finished I couldn’t be happier with what I had. Howard’s ‘mints’ are an enigma worthy of their cult following. With odd flavors like violet, lemon, and guava, these mints border on pocket candy. To play on the playful nature of C. Howard’s flavors and to express their proper pronunciation (often mistaken for ‘chowards’), we created the C. Howards, C. Heaven campaign for our Strategic Communications Creative Portfolio class. Placing the ‘C’ of C. Howards next to the insinuated “see” of ‘C. Heaven’ both expresses the brand’s proper pronunciation while illustrating C. Howard’s unique taste. To visually communicate the flavorful heaven of C. Howards and nod at its iconic square-tab shape, we paired psychedelic language with characters dressed in bold prints, each dreaming of their own, surreal digital collage. To enhance the connection between C. Howard’s eclectic brand identity and that of its far-from-square enthusiasts, we matched each character’s color palettes to the flavor they represent. For our video extension, we amplified the joking connection between squared-shaped C. Howards and psychedelics both visually and sonically, with video copy to clarify that we are indeed talking about a minty-ish, candy-ish product. The mid-century setting, hand-drawn multimedia animation, and fast-paced synched sound with the song “Barley” by Water From Your Eyes’ all combine to create an attention-grabbing video that can break through the social media clutter. With this campaign, we aimed to create multimedia print ads and video content that are memorable and can exist as advertisements and as standalone art. Stoneware, Gas Kiln, Cone 10 Chun Blue, Phil’s White, Shino, Oil Spot The idea for My Dear Jane came into being during a deep reflection of self-identity. In recent years, I have used the image of a young girl - my third-grade self, donning tighty-whities and choppy bangs - to personify this exploration. I grew up in a family of anxiety ridden women, where nights of tear stained cheeks and trembling breaths were a familiar companion. I find solace in the way fawns respond to danger: instinctively dropping into a fetal position, vanishing into the embrace of the tall grass. At the ripe age of eight, I yearned to do the same. To disappear into my surroundings as the weight of anxiety swelled in my chest. At times, the world is simply too much for a small creature to bear. The postures of the figures deliberately mirror each other: if this instinctive response offers protection to one, perhaps it can for the other as well. This emotional vulnerability is reflected in the material itself. The stoneware demands careful handling and attentive viewing, evoking a sense of fragility. Their muted, pale colors allude to their delicacy and youth, while their intimate scale invites them to nuzzle into the palm of your hand. I grew up influenced by conservative ideology. These ideas brought me peace of mind and sparked intellectual curiosity at a time where I questioned my self worth and mental capabilities. I found solace in the lack of change. Given time, I began to understand how harmful these ideas are – especially to people who don’t look like me. For the past ten years, hate has been given a megaphone - and has become normalized. As an artist, I try to understand other’s experiences and channel them in my work to trigger critical thinking processes regarding sociopolitical issues in my audience. I was led to further investigate the world around me - specifically through the lens of the body as a canvas for expression - by John Galliano’s 2024 Maison Margiela Artisanal Collection, which transitions between artistic mediums to express the psychology of experiencing a world that restricts and codifies yet is the breeding grounds for the realization of inner beauty. This led to “In Wake”, a video investigating the inner turmoil accompanying dehumanization in the experience of oppressed groups in the United States. Seven Zero - Spirit Free Lounge is a seventies inspired bar serving zero proof cocktails. Seven Zero aims to create a welcoming atmosphere without the pressures of consuming alcohol. Delicious mocktails and groovy atmospheres inspire the logo and branding that is the backbone of Seven Zero. The brand intends to cater towards “the healthy partier” - a consumer who knows how to balance work and play, and can respect that sometimes the hangover isn’t worth it. After developing a brand personality, I took these pieces and arrived at the logo and brand that is Seven Zero. The three primary logo colors - electric pink, orange peel, and lime wedge - along with the curvy linework that makes up the logo, are all inspired by designs typical to the seventies era. All That Remains (and That Which Does Not) is a video art piece projection mapped onto a framed soft sculpture made of tumbled glass and hand-knitted ribbons of acrylic yarn. This piece is meant to convey the complexities of human emotion and emphasize our continuous pattern of connecting our emotions and memories to the motif of water, despite barriers of time and differing cultures. The idea of connection is expressed through over a thousand stitches of interweaving yarn and shared color palettes which transcend the knitted borders that constrain each piece of glass. The imagery used within the projection contains documentation of an animation made from live EEG data and phone recordings of natural and man-made bodies of water. The EEG- based visuals are Illustrator vectors which were animated according to data on brain activity and facial expression, input from an EMOTIV EPOC headset through Touch Designer. Given its relation to the concepts of water and the existence of life outside of ourselves, this piece is eco-conscious – using recycled materials and creating limited waste. My primary goal for this design was to showcase how unconventional materials can be given a second life through fashion. In my digital design course in the Fall of 2022, I was tasked to develop a digital concept for a sustainable apparel line. This led me to explore vinyl billboards and how they can be reused for apparel. Through my research, I discovered that about 25 million square meters of billboard fabric waste is generated annually in the U.S. While billboard vinyl can be recycled infinitely, they are still dumped into landfills and never break down. Since billboard vinyl is specifically designed to withstand harsh outdoor weather conditions, upcycling it when it reaches its intended end of life can create incredibly durable apparel products, limit landfill waste, and reduce pollution. Still fascinated by billboard vinyl after the semester ended, I decided to actualize my digital concept by purchasing a billboard. Times Square draws inspiration from 1960s styles, specifically the paper dresses, the space race, and mod styles. Featuring an A-line silhouette and color blocking, the dress leverages unique properties of the vinyl and transforms the wearer into an advertisement, reminiscent of Times Square itself. This dress not only highlights the potential for creativity in sustainable design but also emphasizes the need to reduce waste in the fashion industry. Through this dress, I hope to inspire others to think outside of the box, reconsider how they view the materials around them, and contribute to a more sustainable future. Through a process of improvisation, iteration, and documentation in domestic spaces, Untitled Collaboration presents a series of magickal possible realities. Household objects become sigils, charged with each burst of flash. The artists’ collaborative process entails relinquishing ultimate authority over what is created, instead relying on generative glitches in communication to create something beyond their control. We have seen what happens when ideas pass from the screen into IRL space. Untitled Collaboration asks what IRL space looks like when alternative rulesets gathered from the logic of the internet are applied. Artist Statement: Through the fire is an animated music video I created for Valentine’s Day to a higher pitched version of the track similar to the sample used by Kanye West. This video is the part two of an animation I made last year on Valentine’s Day. The animation I made last year was titled “A House is Not A Home” which was an animated music video I made to the song of the same title by Luther Vandross. In the previous video, Cappy is singing about how he feels like the woman that he is in love with doesn’t feel the same way about him. With this piece, Cali and her friends put together a show to reassure him that she loves him. I originally created the idea of this piece when I was in middle school and I have finally possessed the skills to bring my vision to the screen. I also wanted to show the relationship between Cali and Cappy and establish them for future reference as a cartoon power couple. In this piece I used mostly After Effects, but some features and effects I added through Adobe Premiere Pro. For the character designs sets and props, I created them all using Adobe illustrator. The cantilever effect produces ascending terraces offering individual outdoor experiences. Gradually opening its views to the site, a dynamic window system encourages travel through the structure to connect collaborative spaces and classrooms to the natural surroundings. A centralized core allows for efficient use of space, maximizing collaborative space while also providing privacy for both classrooms and terracing. A rotating staircase cuts through the building, creating two double-height spaces and maintaining efficient travel to promote the vertical exploration of the form. Material Loop reimagines the recycling center as civil infrastructure, an architecture that makes environmental systems visible, experiential, and socially engaging. Instead of traditionally concealing waste processing behind industrial walls, the project breaks the marginalized history and presents recycling to the public as an exchange between city, ecology, and energy. Located adjacent to the University of Missouri's power plant, the facility operates as both a material recovery facility and a generator of biomass fuel to support the university's clean energy initiative, positioning waste not as an endpoint but as a resource within a continuous urban cycle. The architecture challenges conventional separations between natural, industrial and public life. Elevated walkways, viewing platforms, and outdoor terraces run parallel to an adjacent tree line and historic trail while inviting visitors to witness processes typically hidden from view, transforming recycling into education, experience, and advocacy. A perforated facade filters light, air, and sightlines, allowing glimpses of activity while adopting passive environmental strategies. Overhead canopy structures span large operational zones, creating sheltered civic space below while expressing the structural logic required for industrial scale. With strategic voids across the program, natural light wells bring light down into the industrial process as well as framing the public terraces, allowing for the continuation of the adjacent nature into the building through biophilic planters complementing the space. Formally and conceptually, the project is guided by the belief that sustainability should not feel restrictive or sacrificial. Instead, it proposes that environmental responsibility can be generous, spatial, and publicly celebrated. The architecture embraces infrastructure as a social and cultural asset, aligning performance with buildings that we want to be in. By merging utility, education, and public space, the project argues for a new typology where systems that sustain urban life are not hidden, but shared and transformative.
