All That Remains (and That Which Does Not) is a video art piece projection mapped onto a framed soft sculpture made of tumbled glass and hand-knitted ribbons of acrylic yarn. This piece is meant to convey the complexities of human emotion and emphasize our continuous pattern of connecting our emotions and memories to the motif of water, despite barriers of time and differing cultures. The idea of connection is expressed through over a thousand stitches of interweaving yarn and shared color palettes which transcend the knitted borders that constrain each piece of glass. The imagery used within the projection contains documentation of an animation made from live EEG data and phone recordings of natural and man-made bodies of water. The EEG- based visuals are Illustrator vectors which were animated according to data on brain activity and facial expression, input from an EMOTIV EPOC headset through Touch Designer. Given its relation to the concepts of water and the existence of life outside of ourselves, this piece is eco-conscious – using recycled materials and creating limited waste. A floral installation dedicated to the memories made with my grandma and how those moments of grief and time have molded my family into who they are today. Tints, tones, and shades of brown curly willow create movement and swirls within this floral tribute for the evolution of grief and growth after loss. There are five well-known and recognizable stages of the grieving process: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. But I believe there is an unexpected sixth step, and that is remembrance. Remembrance makes us feel waves of emotion: sadness, frustration, and even happiness. No matter what time passes, there will always be small reminders of the person you love. Those memories, while they may be hard, will allow you to enjoy small pieces of who they were and how they made you who you are today. My grandma was rooted in a kind of dedication and love for our family. She could be found baking fresh cinnamon rolls or taking steps to ensure that our family farm prospered for generations to come. She was grounding and she supported us. The sculpture of this tree symbolizes the growth and healing after loss. As trees age, their growth is not linear. They hold a memory of the weather and the growing conditions of years past. My symbolic family tree and literal trees alike, when a loss is suffered it is felt for years to come. Our design highlights the craftsmanship of Vespa products through imagery and graphic style inspired by vintage Italian posters. Our goal is to showcase the brand’s heritage and longevity through thoughtful design choices. We were inspired by the work of artists like Paolo Garretto (Lambretta, circa 1955) and Federico Seneca (Cioccolatini Perugina, 1928). Their poster designs and Italian heritage spoke to the Italian brand and led our decision making in typography, color, and composition. The rich and muted jewel tones with bold simple shapes guide our design in a direction reminiscent of their work. We wanted to highlight Vespa as classically Italian and infused with style through print ad design. We focused on Vespa accessories more than the actual scooter to frame Vespa as a lifestyle beyond their vehicles. Additionally, the choice to add texture creates a poster-like look to further drive home Vespa as a beautiful brand that’s art-worthy. If these ads were put into a print production for the masses, the goal is for these to stand alone as artistic posters that exhibit Vespa as a lifestyle choice. Vespa is worthy of their own illustrative posters. Vespa is classic and stylish and should be represented as so. Seven Zero - Spirit Free Lounge is a seventies inspired bar serving zero proof cocktails. Seven Zero aims to create a welcoming atmosphere without the pressures of consuming alcohol. Delicious mocktails and groovy atmospheres inspire the logo and branding that is the backbone of Seven Zero. The brand intends to cater towards “the healthy partier” - a consumer who knows how to balance work and play, and can respect that sometimes the hangover isn’t worth it. After developing a brand personality, I took these pieces and arrived at the logo and brand that is Seven Zero. The three primary logo colors - electric pink, orange peel, and lime wedge - along with the curvy linework that makes up the logo, are all inspired by designs typical to the seventies era. Howard’s ‘mints’ are an enigma worthy of their cult following. With odd flavors like violet, lemon, and guava, these mints border on pocket candy. To play on the playful nature of C. Howard’s flavors and to express their proper pronunciation (often mistaken for ‘chowards’), we created the C. Howards, C. Heaven campaign for our Strategic Communications Creative Portfolio class. Placing the ‘C’ of C. Howards next to the insinuated “see” of ‘C. Heaven’ both expresses the brand’s proper pronunciation while illustrating C. Howard’s unique taste. To visually communicate the flavorful heaven of C. Howards and nod at its iconic square-tab shape, we paired psychedelic language with characters dressed in bold prints, each dreaming of their own, surreal digital collage. To enhance the connection between C. Howard’s eclectic brand identity and that of its far-from-square enthusiasts, we matched each character’s color palettes to the flavor they represent. For our video extension, we amplified the joking connection between squared-shaped C. Howards and psychedelics both visually and sonically, with video copy to clarify that we are indeed talking about a minty-ish, candy-ish product. The mid-century setting, hand-drawn multimedia animation, and fast-paced synched sound with the song “Barley” by Water From Your Eyes’ all combine to create an attention-grabbing video that can break through the social media clutter. With this campaign, we aimed to create multimedia print ads and video content that are memorable and can exist as advertisements and as standalone art. Beautiful Moon is a 16 page graphic design piece outlining the brand guidelines for a fictitious landscaping company of the same name. While it may not look like it at first glance, this project is rooted in the idea of healing. Firstly, it targets healing the earth through its use of native plants and rain garden techniques to ensure natural growth and strategic flooding. Secondly, it targets healing the mind of the consumer through providing a method of escapism in its transformative gardens that take you to alternate worlds and promote meditation through its configurations. The design elements outlined and utilized in this piece work to convey these sentiments. The name Beautiful Moon is derived from the phrase “The moon is beautiful, isn't it?,” a direct translation of the Japanese term for I love you; in having this name, it creates a silent exchange between the consumer and the earth, thanking each other for their help. This message is expressed visually through the company’s logo which depicts a leaf undergoing the phases of the moon, creating imagery of natural growth and conveying the concept of transforming into a new world, a new day. Lastly, the use of a muted color palette, yet vivid imagery, is used to emphasize the harmony between reality and fantasy. Altogether, the hope for viewers is to be able to visualize this company in actuality through not only the information provided, but the design and incorporation of these elements into the branding itself. Nature was so important and influential to me as a child, and as an adult, it is one of the only spaces that helps me with anxiety in a world that usually heightens it. As the author, illustrator, constructor, and designer of this project, I aimed to ignite the same sense of excitement and curiosity in young readers about the natural world that I have, while also instilling a sense of responsibility for its preservation. Through colorful illustrations and a rhyme pattern, the book invites children to explore different ecosystems and also hints at some ways to protect them. In a world increasingly dominated by technology, I believe it's essential to provide children with tactile, sensory experiences if you want to captivate their attention, hints the pop-up aspect. This process involved a lot of research, X-acto knives, and patience, but I am overall very happy with how it came out and think that the Pop-up format will help make this book hold children’s attention. It is so crucial for all humans, not just kids, to think deeply about the planet and how their actions can affect its future. This is why I included some “easter eggs” for adults who read the book to find as well. Through hidden graphs and extra text, more mature readers will see some more pressing data that isn’t so “kid-friendly” but gives a taste of how important switching to a more sustainable lifestyle and mentality is for everyone. In terms of branding, I wanted to put an emphasis on the ampersand sign, because the idea of the brand is merging two unlike concepts into a unified brand. Merging unlike concepts is something that artists do everyday, making this idea the perfect backdrop for a brand that is looking to engage with creatives. The original scope for this company was that it was a non-alcholic bar, with a 70’s, retro feel, which is why I chose the specific colors and typography featured in the pitch deck. From the precise specifications of the logo design to the color palette inspired by the hues of a blazing fire, every detail has been thoughtfully considered to ensure a cohesive and immersive brand experience. Through the lens of the brand guidelines, I aimed to encapsulate the essence of PYROFUSION, a celebration of craftsmanship, flavor, and community. Title A name given to the resource Ginger Rogers X 1970 Wearable Decor Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Funderburg, Will Abstract A summary of the resource. For my inspiration for this design, I wanted to take from the design elements of 1970s decor mixed with Hollywood actress, Ginger Rogers. From the 70s decor, I chose a floral wallpaper design and a corduroy chair, and used these textiles and design elements for my final design. I wanted to mix these 1970s elements of this with Ginger Rogers love of dance and movement created by her garments. For my design process, I wanted to take inspiration from both 70s fashion and Ginger Rogers fashions. Ginger's love of godets adding them into the classic 70s bell bottoms and lined bell sleeves helped add the movement and drama I was looking for. For my pattern making process, I drafted the shirt using paper manipulating the darts into princess seams, adding yokes, and adding fullness to the sleeves and collar to create drama. For the pants, I used CLO3D and drafted each piece using the software. I wanted to give the look of the chair in the pants with the appliqué on the side to give the same feel as the chair design style. Along with the use of the 70 floral print from the shirt to the pants back pockets and godets. I hope this garment portrays the whimsy and grooviness of the 70s, with the movement and flair of Ginger Rogers, to show the free expressive side of both in this piece. My primary goal for this design was to showcase how unconventional materials can be given a second life through fashion. In my digital design course in the Fall of 2022, I was tasked to develop a digital concept for a sustainable apparel line. This led me to explore vinyl billboards and how they can be reused for apparel. Through my research, I discovered that about 25 million square meters of billboard fabric waste is generated annually in the U.S. While billboard vinyl can be recycled infinitely, they are still dumped into landfills and never break down. Since billboard vinyl is specifically designed to withstand harsh outdoor weather conditions, upcycling it when it reaches its intended end of life can create incredibly durable apparel products, limit landfill waste, and reduce pollution. Still fascinated by billboard vinyl after the semester ended, I decided to actualize my digital concept by purchasing a billboard. Times Square draws inspiration from 1960s styles, specifically the paper dresses, the space race, and mod styles. Featuring an A-line silhouette and color blocking, the dress leverages unique properties of the vinyl and transforms the wearer into an advertisement, reminiscent of Times Square itself. This dress not only highlights the potential for creativity in sustainable design but also emphasizes the need to reduce waste in the fashion industry. Through this dress, I hope to inspire others to think outside of the box, reconsider how they view the materials around them, and contribute to a more sustainable future. This garment, Midnight, was created from scratch, inspired by the American performer and icon, Ginger Rogers. Starting from initial inspiration drawn from her movies, dancing, photoshoots, and incredible fashion taste, I began exploring silhouettes from each decade Ginger thrived in through draping. I landed on a 1930s length and fit that emphasizes her sophistication and elegance through a sleek navy material enhanced with sheer embellished bell sleeves with a faux fur trim and added flare for dancing. Each of these features honors a different aspect of Ginger's inspiring personality that I felt connected to - elegance, sophistication, timelessness and youthfulness. When conceptualizing a new creation I strive to design a piece that aligns with the overarching theme, idea or person in question but also with my personal design aesthetic. After bringing my design and idea to life I hope the viewers are able to feel and understand the sparkling and inspiring presence of Ginger Roger, and even inspire them to embrace their own unique style with confidence. This project is a part of a larger work that explores masculine vulnerability. Through this project, my goal was to capture and investigate the contrasting nature of the vulnerable man. College is the first taste of independence for many young adults. For this reason, the time young men spend at college are significant, as the relationships they build tend to be the most genuine and heavily relied upon. When these relationships are not formed, there can be dire consequences. Manifest destiny is a phrase that summarizes men’s desire to forge their own path to success. Some would suggest that the desire to avoid the formation of deep relationships is inherently masculine. As a result, men often self isolate. In my photos, I capture both sides of this coin, capturing soft flesh and thick skin; cold stares and pain-afflicted eyes; the broken and the healed. This is the masculine experience. Title A name given to the resource Black Utopia Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Davis, Trinity Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource A Utopia is an imaginary community or society that possesses highly desirable or near perfect qualities for its members. In my work Black Utopia, I imagine this condition for women in my community. Inspired by artist Tyler Mitchell, my photographs describe self-love, empowerment, and intelligence. I am pushed to create lyrical, poetic, almost sculptural works, which foreground the elegance I see within the African American community. Knowing that a Black Utopia will never be obtained, I am inclined to create images with a futuristic, almost unsettling touch. Many of my photographs block or restrict visual access to the portrait subject by way of nature, referencing the impossibility of Black Utopia. As a bear crossed near me in a field in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, I peered out the sunroof of my car with a telephoto lens. I was able to produce a collection of captivating photos with the sunlight shining off of the black bear’s fur. While safe in an unfenced reserve, these wild bears could wander free, and it was amazing to see them approach us in a perfect position for golden hour photos. I have always thought drag was a beautiful art form, but I didn’t know much about the process that went into its creation. In our current political climate where gender expression and performance are being criminalized, I wanted to bring the viewer behind the curtain into a drag performer’s personal space where they could see the creative aspects and artistry of crafting the persona. In Behind the Curtain, I explore the intimate parts of drag to capture not only the performer but also their environment. For this project I took inspiration from many sources including the photobook of Jess T. Dugan’s, Look at Me Like You Love Me. In this book Dugan combines portraits and still lives to tell a very personal story about relationships, solitude, family, loss, healing, and the transformations that define a life. I employed Dugan’s technique to include still lives of the drag performer’s room and the aftermath of the performance. The great sportswriter Steve Rushin once wrote a column, titled “Wrigley Rapture,” a beautiful first-person account of a Chicago Cubs day game at Wrigley Field, during which he hears this interesting exchange: A cell phone bleats behind first base, and the shirtless man who answers it says, "What? I can't hear you. No, I'm at Wrigley, watching these *&@#%! losers lose." But the complaint sounds insincere, halfhearted. Some are used to watching their team lose. Mizzou men’s basketball fans, who were treated to a 25-win season last year and an NCAA Tournament appearance, now are forced to endure a 14-game (and counting!!!) losing streak. If someone calls a Mizzou fan who is at a game, and the fan answers, “No, I’m at Mizzou Arena, watching these *&@#%! losers lose,” would it be insincere or halfhearted? Perhaps the losing has gotten so bad that the fan would be truthfully answering, meaning every bit of what he says, unlike the Cubbie fan. Those who, like me, who have watched every excruciating game, know what has taken place. We have seen the players lose hope. We have seen the coach cuss and scream in vain. We have even seen the mascot– joyous Tiger that he is– join in on the misery. In this photo series, gathered by me at the arena as I cover the men’s team for the sports blog Rock M Nation, I explore the experience as close to the action as anyone can get– as a credentialed press photographer on the court. My submission for the 2023 NEXT Student Design Competition consists of the transformation of an unoccupied office space in Dallas, Texas for NEXT, a fictional global architecture and interior design firm based in Los Angeles, California. The inspiration behind my design for the space was derived from a butterfly’s chrysalis and what it represents: growth, transformation, and rebirth. The aspiration behind my concept was for anyone who is visiting or employed at the office to enter feeling inspired and exit feeling fulfilled. The NEXT office is a hub of creativity and artistic exploration, and I aimed for the design to reflect that ethos. The office’s design draws from the chrysalis motif in several ways, including the color palette and metaphorical implications, symbolizing the potential for growth and transformation, akin to a caterpillar emerging as a butterfly. To develop my concept, I utilized evidence-based design principles, incorporating studies on color theory, biophilia, and ergonomics to ensure optimal benefits for all users of the space. One of the key priorities of the design was to ensure the office's accessibility and inclusivity for everyone, achieved through the use of a gender-neutral color scheme and compliance with regulations for those with physical impairments. Being new to Columbia and the University of Missouri in 2021, I was excited to expand my horizons and explore a world that was new to me. Having always lived in a small town, I was thrilled at the opportunity to explore my architectural creativity in a big, new world. I couldn't wait for the motivation I would get when moving into an environment that I thought would peak my craving for design. I was looking for design inspiration like that from Santiago Calatrava’s, The Oculus, or Rem Koolhaas’s, Seattle Public Library. I quickly realized however, that I was too naive, and Columbia lacked the inspiration and unique design I was hoping for. The campus's historical buildings, Memorial Union and Jesse Hall are exceptional, but provide no inspiration for a student like me. In my third year as an architectural studies major, after finally gaining adequate experience, I could show off my motivation. What better way to put my abilities to the test than to make a grand sports arena right here in Columbia. In my opinion a unique piece like a sports arena can define a city, a city like Columbia, which lacks such a piece. They are bold and extravagant and only one's imagination is the limiting factor. My design for the Mizzou Sports Arena and Recreation Center came from my motivation to provide Columbia with an awe-inspiring piece that sets it apart from the rest of the city. BUILDING as both metaphor and practice, is the concept for this project. Not only does the company design and create buildings but, more importantly, they emphasize a variety of foundational elements, or blocks within the company to build upon. Building community, connections, value, inclusivity, ideas, and long-term success are just a few of the important principles that NEXT intends to nurture within its workplace. The idea that every employee within a company brings their own individual strengths and weaknesses to the greater whole is much the same as a building. Like each individual material in a building, each individual employee must collaborate and connect to create success. This is reflected in the design in a variety of ways. From the color palette being inspired by raw materials to the acoustic ceiling panel positioning, building systems imagery is woven throughout the entire office. The logo itself is a system of random blocks inserted into an empty steel frame spelling out NEXT. Without the wooden blocks, the frame would be hollow and cold.
