Chloee Rudolph: Kinroot
Artist Statement
Ice cream from coffee mugs, cutting boards on a wall, flower stems in the sink, a fish named Fred above the fridge, and in the corner a broken plate. A space where all items, emotions, and memories no matter how peculiar, can coexist. I was inspired by personal experiences in the kitchen and how they aligned with others to create a work that is both nostalgic and reflective of this domestic space. In this work I use symbols and items from all the kitchens that were once mine. The kitchens presplit and post-split and the kitchens during childhood and post childhood. Although rooted in autobiography, I use a character named “ee” as an emotional vessel and protector. Through her, the kitchens become more than physical places of my past, it becomes an interior landscape where memory, anxiety, and comfort intersect. This painting takes place in between reality and an imaginary world. Working in oil paint allows me to build layered surfaces that mirror the accumulation of memory over time and mix colors on the canvas as the memories intertwine. I exaggerate color and distort perspective to create a slightly unsettled environment, where familiar objects feel symbolic rather than purely functional.. In above the fridge and in the corner, the domestic space becomes both sanctuary and archive, crossing the imaginary with reality, questioning what is remembered, and reflecting on what lingers long after the moment has left.
