Artist Statement
Throughout a person’s life, hardships can teach us the most. Regardless of the magnitude of the problem, through those events we learn and – hopefully – understand how to avoid similar obstacles later in life. For me, art making has become a documentation of these struggles as I continue to learn and grow as an artist, a student, and a person. Deep, personal emotions are something I struggle to communicate in words. I can document my state of mind through a specific range of colors, curvature, impression of space, and form of exaggeration in the subject. My interest in different mediums is apparent in my works throughout my college years, but I tend to gravitate towards painting, drawing and printmaking. Thoughtfully creating these artworks helps me process silence and the extreme abuse I’ve endured. It is also a way for me to reach out to an audience who may be able to relate with the image without knowing what it means to me personally. While specific to my own circumstances, I believe the visual and material dynamics can be points of access for viewers.
