Callie Brinkman: Set for Two
Artist Statement
My work examines the relationship between traditional ceramic craft and its presence within contemporary settings. I approach functional objects as carriers of memory and domestic history, forms that accumulate meaning through use and repetition. Through ceramics and mixed media, I reference inherited techniques and experiences to explore the tension between tradition and reinterpretation. Grounded in my upbringing in Missouri, my practice reflects the visual language of home: ornamental detail, subtle additive gestures, and processes passed down through generations. Influenced by women who taught me to create, I engage methods historically associated with domestic labor and reposition them within a fine art context. My foundation in ceramics informs a sensitivity to function and form, where utility becomes a framework rather than a limitation. By reclaiming these objects and how I approach them, I investigate how identity is shaped through place, habit, and material culture. The work operates in dialogue with contemporary art discourse, inviting users/viewers to reconsider the spatial and conceptual boundaries that have historically separated craft from fine art.
